Going Back For Nursing

Hello everyone,

I need help. I have finally figured out how to improve my grades and I am finishing the semester with possibly an A in A&P 2 which I am excited about depending on how the final exam and last lab practical goes. I am not worried about the lab practical I have had all As in lab this semester maybe 1 or 2 Bs but lecture has been the opposite. My exams are not great but considering I didn't pass A&P2 the first time I am doing well. I decided that going for Medical Assisting is not what I want but nursing is where my heart is. My school's nursing program does a point system off pre reqs for 3 classes A&P 1, Psychology and English as well as the TEAS 6 subscores. I completed my A&P1, English and Psychology. English and Psych are worth 15 points for an A, 10 for a B and 5 for a C. A&P1 is 30 points for an A, 20 a B and 10 for a C.

My grades are less than perfect. I have A B in English and Psych and a C in A&P 1. The Bs aren't bad but I am stressing about A&P. It is weighed heavy and I know if I retake it I will get an A. I have talked to the nursing advisors they said I shouldn't retake classes. To focus on the TEAS 6. By retaking A&P 1 I will drastically improve my GPA and earn way more points toward applying. I even took my co reqs like speech, college math, and sociology my other social science elective. I'm taking Advanced Physiology in the spring and Microbiology in the summer. Those are the only 2 classes needed for the nursing program. I just don't know what to do about A&P1. I feel I need to retake it knowing I am gonna have an A in A&P 2 this semester. Any advice is more than appreciated.

Wow - that's a complicated point system. Your advisors may be telling not to retake A&P1 because that grade won't just drop off if you get a better one. Chances are, it would just be averaged with the new grade and this wouldn't make that much difference. Many schools do not allow retakes unless you fail a class.

Best of luck to you.

Hi,

I may be playing a devil's advocate but I do think you should not retake A&P 1. To begin with, and not to sound negative, what if you do not get an A in it? What if you get even worse grade than a C? Also, not sure about your school's requirements and procedures towards the grades, but some schools I know of do not allow retakes. And those that do either still consider the first grade, or average the first the the second grade. In your case, since you got a C in A&P 1 and you are sure you will get an A in A&P 2, your average grade for A&P is B, which is rather good. Also, do you have extra time and money to pay for the class you want to retake?

In any event, ultimately, the decision is yours. You should do what your gut and your heart tell you. Go with your instincts.

Yes everything said is true and thanks for your word of advice. I will have to keep my C in A&P 1 I do know I will have an A in A&P 2 this semester the problem is A&P 2 don't go for points A&P 1 does. I had the C in 2012 when I tried to apply for a BSN program. I know I am not competive with the C but its a chance I have to take. I still need the last 2 sciences Microbiology and Chemistry or Advanced Physiology toward the program again they are not for points but if I do well in those last science classes and focus on doing well on the TEAS I might have a shot. If not the ASN the LPN. Its a challenge knowing I am going against many with all As and high TEAS scores but I put it like this if its something you really want than giving up isn't an option. Thanks again for the advice very much appreciated.

It sounds weird to me that your school only counts A&P I for points and not A&P II, since it's the second course that compounds on the first and a better indication of how you're doing overall in that science. If you're 100% sure that's how it is though I wish you the best of luck and hope you have enough to get in!

I have points to get in its just that the C in A&P 1 is weighed heavy and I have a C its 30 for an A 20 a B and 10 for C. The program used to calculate

A&P 2 in the point system but dropped it like a year ago now A&P 1 only goes for points. I am not sure why they did that. I have seen people at my school who got in with scores well below 120/160 . 160 is the total points possible 60 pre reqs and 100 for TEAS but its not even possible to get a 100 on the TEAS which I am aware of. A&P2 is just a co req for the LPN/RN program it does not go toward points. Only courses that go for points are Psychology, English and A&P 1. The others like math, microbiology, chemistry, communications etc are just co re reqs or general education courses for the programs.
