Getting discouraged! Help!

Nursing Students General Students

I formally petitioned for the nursing program at our local community college. I did not get in last fall but was told by admissions that I would be in this fall, 2003. Just go ahead and take all my other classes and then all I would have left would be the nursing and clinicals. Well, I've done that. I am finishing up A&PIII and a few other general electives. Nothing what-so-ever to take this summer!

And now...I'm being told that I will not be in this fall either! Talk about discouraged! I am 46 years old, kids grown and out of the house and I returned to school full-time to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse and now this! I honestly do not know what to do. My nursing advisor told me to go ahead and take more classes and that I would be in the program fall of 2004, or I could sit out a year. "Sit out a year"!! They don't seem to understand that all of that learning, especially A&P and Micro are those darned subjects that if you don't use it, you loose it! I've even thought of camping on the nursing directors door step to protest!! (Oh yea...she did insert a student into the fall program. Funny...she and this girls mother worked together for twenty years. Yes, she admitted to doing this but said she didn't realize that she would be starting this fall. Right!! Guess it's who you know at times!)

Anyone else run into this type of situation? I live in Ohio and other nursing programs are offered but in other cities. Any help would be appreciated. :bluecry1:

Yes, the waiting lists are terrible! And I can understand the shortages of instructors, but in our area, it is also the available sites for clinicals. You can't do all of your clinicals at LTC facilities. I even suggested maybe some of the larger physician's offices allowing clinicals to be held in their practices. Not sure if they liked that idea or not.

I have been applying to BSN, ASN and LPN for 5 years. Still haven't got in. Have a 4.0 and perfect attendence in prereqs. Yes the high school students get top priority in acceptance. My science courses are going to time out so it will soon be the end of the road for me. I can't take the time and money to retake the classes and wait 5 more years again. Lot of students experiencing the same difficulties.

Where are you located and applying toni?

High school students getting top priority makes me angry. To me, that can be considered nothing less than age discrimination. Our school doesn't make it that obvious, but high school students are able to get "direct admit" right out of high school, guranteed a spot if they have a high enough GPA...but not older transfer students. Go figure.

I totally agree!! It's definitely age discrimination. And what really ticks me off is, over half of these so-called high school students that were direct admits flunk out the first quarter! But of course, we then give them another chance....they can apply for re-admission back into the program the following fall!! (Above everyone else on the waiting list!!)

There has been so much crapola at our school the past few years that the reputation that it was one of the best nursing schools in our area has completely gone down the tubes. This in part is due to the fact they hired a new director for the program. I really don't think this woman knows what the heck she is doing!!

Wha-wha-what?? Tell your advisor to put it in writing this time ;)

Don't ask me how....but I received my acceptance letter this past Saturday. Needless to say, I was jumping around, yelling, crying, you name it!! So for all of those out there, do not get discouraged. I know that I had but by the grace of God...I got in!!

:roll :D :) :)

Congratulations!!! That's awesome! Woohoo!

That's so wonderful! Congrats to you. When do you start?

I went to orientation today, of course I've had everything ready "just in case"!! I start fall quarter September 15th. I'm so excited I can hardly wait!! My nursing classes and clinicals are all that I have left to finish!

Ladytopaz,

I am very happy for you. I have been denied two times nowand I am at a dead end because I am an international student. I wish someone could talk to the Dean for me to get into the program. No one wants to listen to me. I have no one to turn to but God. I feel so sad.

I do not know what I am going to do now because I have taken all the prerequisites for the Bachelors degree. I have applied to other schools but they are not saying anything positive. Only God can help me now.

Ann.

Ladytopaz,

Don't give up. I will soon be 47 and I'm keeping my fingers crossed and doing a lot of praying. I started my pre-reqs in '99, started the ADN program in 2000, hubby had open heart surg, I failed the 2nd semester, had to repeat it. Started my 2nd year, hubby's heart acted up again, I missed so much, my grades weren't passing so I withdrew and had to repeat that semester. Finally made it thru last semester, and only have one more to go. I'm supposed to start back to school on Monday, but hubby's stress test didn't turn out so good and his Dr. is going to send him to the Cleveland Clinic, don't know the date yet, so we'll just take it one day at a time. I can miss a few days, but don't know how he'll make it thru the rotoblade procedure(atherectomy). His heart is so diseased, he's had 2 CABG's, stents, etc. He's 58.

Just hang in there, that's what I'm trying to do. Good luck to you.
