G.P.A for admission to your school?

Nursing Students General Students

Published

hi guys, i live in honolulu and i just started my pre-req's for nursing and i was very concerned for my GPA. well after calculating what i might get for my pre-req i will average a 3.25 GPA. i heard from student and other people that our community college will not even look at you if you dont have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, our school is very competitive. i find this very discouraging. i ask my fellow students what there GPA is and most of them say anywhere from 3.3-4.0.

well with my low GPA, do i even have a chance to get in the nursing program, or should i just retake some classes to bring up my GPA?

also i was wondering what the GPA is in order for the nursing school to even consider you for their program?

thanks

aloha

I would say, talk to your advisor. At my school it is your GPA versus other's who are trying to get in. And, you'd be suprised with what people try to get in with!! Don't sweat it until you talk to some one who knows what's going on...

Don't listen to rumors, go get the facts from your advisor or someone in your school's nursing department.

At the BSN school I'm applying to, the average GPA they took last year was 3.3. Admissions criteria will vary from year to year and school to school, though, so your best bet is to check with your local college.

If all else fails and you need to pull your GPA up, you could take additional classes or retake courses you did poorly in. Good luck! :)

at my school it is a points system anyone with 3.5-4.0 gets 4 points 3.0-3.5 is 3 points so on and so forth and science gpa ia pointed also so maximum points possible is 7 and last term some people with 5 points were not accepted. ie ( 3.0-3.5 gpa and 3.0 in sciences) its getting really bad here.

At my school (a community college), you only have to have a 2.0 in all the required pre-reqs to apply to the nursing program. The top of the waiting list is composed of people who finished their pre reqs earliest (with a C or better of course). GPA is only further used if they have to choose between 2 people. I will be finishing my pre reqs this semester, with an overall GPA of 3.914. I was told by my advisor I will be at the bottom of the list because I am just finishing my classes.

Your best bet is to talk to an advisor at your school. Things vary significantly from school to school.

i can tell you this now with your GPA of 3.9, if you were going to school at kcc in hawaii you will defintely get into teh nursing program, of course your NLN has to be 95 or higher.

here at KCC the top people with the highest scores get accepted, teh school does not choose potential candidates based up who finishes earliest.

We are not allowed to take Pharmacology until we are officially accepted into the program.

3.25 is a low GPA to you? That's an awesome GPA. I guess maybe your choices are limited b/c of where you live? Otherwise, you'd have a really good shot at getting in nursing school.

I think it usually averages about 3.0.

Where I go, you have to have a 2.0..which is really rare and unusual, but lucky for me last year.

Where I live...the application says you must have a 2.5, but in reality, the average person has a 3.0...so those under 3.0 will be put on a waiting list.

This is the first semester our CC has announced the lowest GPA they took for program. 3.4 was the lowest GPA that got accepted into the program. The program here in Bethlehem, PA has gotten as competitive as everywhere else. I'm glad I'm in and I'm lovin' it.

Before repeating classes, talk to an advisor and see what you can do to get in. They might also be able to tell you the lowest GPA to get in and what, if anything else they consider.

The requirements for our school is a GPA of 2.5 for all college classes.

Our pre-req list consists of:

Anatomy and Physiology (Bio 24) or separately (Bio 20 and Bio22) *

Math 101

Chemistry 3A

English 1A

Sociology 1A *

Psychology 2

Speech 1 or 2

Political science
