First Day Spring 2010

Nursing Students General Students

I am dying to hear how the first day went?!?!?! I know some of you started on the 4th. How's it going? Are you jumping into assignments already? How are your professors, classmates? I can't wait to get started! Orientation is a week from tomorrow!

I started my first day on the 4th. :) And oh my goodness with the reading.

We walked in on the first day and picked up somewhere around 15 text books, for the first four months alone. The professors have assigned a bunch of reading about stress and time management, which as big as they are pushing the subject stresses me out alone.

The professors seem... interesting. They all have several years of nursing under their belts, so that's neat. There is a bit more rambling than I was anticipating, but perhaps it's just because it's the first week. We have a really in depth and detailed syllabus for each class, but so far we haven't been able to hit all the topics that the teacher anticipates in a day, hardly even half. That concerns me, but I'm sure I'm worrying for nothing.

Classmates are diverse. Out class is made up of mostly women. I think over half of them are mothers, and a good number single mothers at that, so much respect goes to those ladies. Age wise we're sitting from about 20 to 60. It's crazy.

I got a chance to talk to a student a semester ahead today. She said that it was nothing to worry about with all the reading, and the first semester shouldn't be too rough, so that eased my mind a bit.

Overall, I'm still very excited, and no we haven't been slammed with assignments yet, just chapter after chapter of reading.

Specializes in Emergency Dept. Trauma. Pediatrics.

My first day of second semester starts on the 19th. We have our first exam that next Monday

Just finished my second day of my third quarter and it's not too bad so far! I'm comparing it to the last two quarters which were pretty grueling for me though. I had to repeat Pathophysiology and that was devestating to me at the time. Now I look at it as a blessing because it's only going to make Med/Surg a little easier to digest.

I have two quizzes next Tuesday, a paper due next Wednesday and about 15 chapters for 3 classes to read and clinicals start for me on Sunday from 6am to 5pm. Talk about jumping right it!

Good luck to you in nursing school journey! It's proven to be the hardest thing I've ever done to date but it will be so worth it in the end! :p

-Best to you in 2010!

That is the best attitude you can have, sadly so many people don't. Everything hasn't been a bed of roses, and looking at the second semester schedule and what I have heard about Med/Surge and feel a lot of how I felt when I first started, excitement and anxiety. But overall I still can't help but be still very eager. I see so many people act like it's a prison sentence they were forced into and then they do poorly. I look at it differently and I don't face a lot of the same issues the negative people do.

Anyway, it seems like you have an awesome attitude going in and that will be Key. I guarantee it!

Mi Vida Loca -

Thanks so much! I have worked for 8 hard years at the pre-reqs and now that nursing school is finally here, I'm so pumped! I have no doubt about there being hard times but I'm a second career person and worked in mortgage for the last 15 years (since graduating high school) and my last job, especially, was beyond horrible. All I think that I need for motivation is to remember that job and not look back! I'm finally in school for me, to succeed for myself and my family and to do what I want to do, for once! For me, school is liberating myself from cubicles and the doldrums of office work and to really help people and help make their lives a little better. No way is this a prison sentence in my eyes! I feel bad for the people who think that way. It just makes everything to do with school negative. What a sad way to live. Cheers to this upcoming semester and may we all do well!
