I know this was discussed before but I didn't pay any attention to it because it didn't pertain to me at the time. I have been looking for my acceptance letter to nursing school. Today I got 2 letters from my school. One was from the president of the school congradulating me for making the Presidents list. (2nd semester in a row) and the other saying that I no longer qualify for ANY federal financial aid including student loans because I have axceeded the maximum number of attempted hours at my community college. It say I can have no more than 96 hours.
I just started to cry. There is no way I can afford to pay for nursing school. The only reason I got to start taking my Pre-req's is because I got a student loan.
I attended college 15 years ago right out of high school and didn't hardly try and have a very low overall GPA because of it. I looked up my school transcript on the school website and it says I only have 78 attempted hours. It is saturday so i couldnt call the school.
I have worked hard the last year to get the grades to make sure I got accepted to Nursing School and now it may all be blown away because of this.
I have searched the archives under financial aid to read the discussion that was on here before and cant find it.
Can anyone shed any light on this situation. I am so scared. How come nobody warned me about this. I cant find anything in the college handbook or website that says anything about it.
Please help!!!! I think I am going to be sick.
God Bless,
Mary Ann

I went through this as well. Pretty much the same scenario - didn't do good 10 years ago when I first went to college (had a lot of depression and medical problems as well and dropped several classes) but those hours still count towards your attempted hours. Is there a 4 year college around you could go to? They don't have the same restrictions on the # of hours, although at some point you will also max out with them. Also with community colleges, once you have an associates degree (or bachelors) they will no longer give you financial aid.
I would suggest trying to find scholarships or loan programs. Try to find a sympathetic person in the financial aid office. Even if she can't help you with federal financial aid, maybe she can point you in the right direction for other forms?
Don't let this get you down - keep fighting for what you want to do. Perhaps you could get a job at a hospital and let them pay for your school?

I am in the same boat (I have a Bachelor's degree). I plan on applying for private loans which will have a higher interest rate than federally funded loans, but if that is the price I have to pay then so be it.

I'm in the exact situation. I have had to pay for all of my prereques out of my pocket. I just emailed the school the other day and asked if grants and scholarships count. They havn't got back with me yet. Does anyone know? I could really use a scholarship but I'm not going to bother applying if I can't get one because if this rule.

If you are going into the medical field there is always money if you are willing to pay it back... have you looked into indentured servitude
LOL
No there's that gov't program where you contract to work back the money they paid.. someone's got to have the link..
MaryAnn, try this websites . I did a quick search and came up with these, but you may have to do some legwork on them. Some of these may only cover you once you are actually ACCEPTED into a nursing program.

Also, alot of hospitals will pay off your student loans if you agree to work for them for a certain amount of time
