Delegation on nursing

Nursing Students General Students

Published

I have this opportunity to travel to South Africa with a group of other pre nursing students over the summer. I really want to go, but it costs alot of money. I do not qualify for financial aid because of my parents income, however they are not supporting this trip at all. I do not want to take out another student loan, as I have two already. I thought about trying to get sponsors, but the program is not tax deductable so many companies will not want to help out. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

Is there any way you can talk to other family members who might be willing to support you financially? I went to Africa and did 6mo volunteer in Zimbabwe - most family members thought I was crazy but my aunt and my grandma were willing to help me pay. It was definitely worth it, changes your perspective of the world forever! Hope this helps...

Unfortunately I am in EXACTLY the same boat you are. I too got invited to go on this trip but can't afford it either and they don't give much time to come up with the money. I so badly wanted to go but no one in my family understands 'the big deal' so it will go down as one of those "wish I would have" experiences. :sniff:

On a side note, do you know the critieria they used to chose who gets to go? I know they mentioned the deans list, but I have classmates who are on the dean's list who didn't get invited? Any ideas?

Sorry I didn't have any solutions for you, but know that you are not alone;)

I dont really know what they use to nominate everyone. I was on the Dean's list as well, but as I understand, I was nominated just for being in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

I guess this will just be a "wish i would have" experiences for me also...:sniff:

I got that invitation too and it looks like everyone on the National Dean's List got it as well. Yeh, going would be soooo nice, but my application is already somewhere in the recycling box.

I guess they'll send it next year again ;) so try to save some money.

This is the second year that I've been invited with no intentions of going (family, school & finances).

Is it feasable to get a few friends together to have a quick fundraiser? How about having a gift wrapping service in your local mall /church/ school or how about offering babysitting services to your neighbors for New Years Eve or for christmas shopping days? You could even offer snow shoveling (or equivelent to your particular landscape/weather.) I'm not sure where you live, but I'd hire some-one that wants to go on a trip of a life-time to do these things for me :)

hey so i missed the deadline for this opportunity, i think it was a little too expensive for me anyway. but thank you all for your input. I am going to continue to look for other options similar to this, maybe a little less expensive, so if anyone has any suggestions or have participated in any programs like that let me know. I am looking into one, i will post the website when i get the chance. it is around $3000 but does not include meals or airfare and it is in Cyprus.

So like i said, any ideas would be great! have a great day!
