I have a question concerning chemistry as it pertains to A&P. I am currently taking a new chemistry course geared toward allied health students, the instructor is a retired polymer chemist and is very hard. He started the quarter stating that three people passed his spring course with a C and one student received an A, that's it out of 18 students and this was an intro to chemistry class. This quarter we have 3 exams and a final over 24 chapters, that's all. We asked for extra work or quizes, to make sure we were on the same page, (not expecting a grade for them) and his response was "If you want quizzes and homework, go back to F****'n high school." He actually used the f word. There have been other issues too and last week the class minus one (she was out that day) met with the Dean to express our concerns. I received a call friday that the class has been canceled today and on Wednesday it is very important I attend as we will have all of our concerns answered at that time. I currently have a high B in the class (based on one exam, and the fact I study at least 4 hours a day) and am concerned that I am going to be behind the ball when it comes to HA & HP. I purchased an anatomy and physiology Cliff notes review over the weekend and it appears that I have a good grasp on the chemistry mentioned in the book.

My question is what should I focus on so I can be prepared for HA & HP?

I appreciate any imput as this has me dreaming of polyatomic ions and Fischer projections.

I am not sure what you mean by HA & HP...

But if you are asking what part pf cemistry we used in AP 1 and 2...then in my case it was the Kreb Cycle. We used it a lot! I also used it in Micro and Patho. The Kreb Cycle was very important in our classes.

We also used conversions a lot. This will continue on into dosage calculations as well.

I am sorry you have a teacher like that. My teacher was actually very good. However, the program I took Chem in no longert requires it for nursing students. They just decided that an extra pharm class would be better than the Chem class.

The program I am in now requires Chem - but I do not have to take it here since I got an A in it the first time I took it.

It is so hard to answer your question. Every program is different and your's could expect you to use it a lot more. However, in my experience knowing the Kregb Cycle and conversion methods was the only thing that I got out of it that I used again.

I would add that knowing acid/base reactions is helpful when you get to respiratory & urinary system physiology.

Also, knowing the properties of that miracle solvent water is handy in A & P.

Good for you for being so diligent

That is true...i forgot about the acid/base reactions...

However, I had AP1 and 2 before I had chemistry..so I am having to think backwards.

wow.. thats not cool.

My AP and Micro classes included chemistry topics such as:

-chemical bonds

-chemical reactions

-acids/bases

-the structure and nature of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and nucleic acids

We really didn't get into anything more detailed than that. There was no scary stuff such as balancing chemical equations. I'm sure you will have no problems.

There really isn't that much chemistry in A&P I and II, at least not enough to be really concerned about. Most of the chemistry needed for the class is pretty basic. If you have taken the intro to chemistry, you should be fine. B.T.H
