Caaring for your own child = Work Experience

Well does it. I was just convoing wth my sis, about my upcoming job search, and was telling here that I wish I had recent work experience. (I haven't worked since NOV. 04, I was pregnant at the time). So anyway she suggested I use my mommy experience and translate it into CNA experience. It may sound dumb to some but it is actually making sense to me now. I mean I have a 5 month old (6 months tomorrow), and I care for him 24/7. I do the same things that I would be doing for people in an LTC, bathing, changing, dressing, entertaining, and ya know all of the ADLs. Yea it is regular mothing but still they are basically the same, all of that plus what I have neve told anyone on the board, my son has two physical disabilities (plagio, and tort), so we do about 2 hours of exercise everyday for the tort, some repositioning for the plagio, and basic exercises to make sure he doesn't get behind physically (which is going quite well, he is actually ahead).

So could that be included on an application, and if so how would I explain it?

I commend you on taking such good care of your little boy. You sound like a good mom.

Unfortunately, this cannot be on a resume OR application if it insinuates that you actually worked in a facility as a CNA doing these procedures. Sorry. That would be fraudulent. Now, if there is a place for experience you might have other than job-related and/or special certifications, seminars, etc., then you could add that info there. I am trying to visualize in my minds' eye how that should be worded: Life Experience??

Good luck!!

Thanks, and thanks. That is exactly what I meant. I guess I throw it in on my resume, after my certificates and additional education. What should I entitle it?

Make a title: Other Experience

Siri

Dream Nurse,

Siri has given good advice. I know someone who wanted to get into Midwifery Nursing school and, like you, had great mothering/caring skills from taking care of her own children. Unfortunately, the school didn't buy it :o

But it's a great suggestion that you could include these qualities at the end of your professional resume. Maybe you could write a 'personal profile' as an attachment?

Good luck :)

Thanks ya'll. I am off to edit my resume.
