Are they lying?

Nursing Students General Students

There are so many people in my class that say they hardly ever or never study and still get As. Two people even claim to have never even opened one of their nursing textbooks (we are starting our Sr. year). Granted I know these two people are very smart...but how can they do so well? I mean our lectures are so mediocre, they are the skin and bones of the chapters assigned in reading; and nursing knowledge is not something you "just know" right? I don't get it, it makes me feel like a dummy...classes they laugh at I studied my tail off for (like pharm hello!!! I earned that A) and I read almost all the assigned chapters (I skipped a few this last semester but that is because the teacher really only tested you on what she lectured on because she was the "all and powerful know it all and the book was wrong" even though she assigned chapters)...are you one of these people that never study or hardly study and have never read your nursing text and still get As? Do you have mystical powers?:chuckle

I am one of those students. I pay attention in class, take notes, and read my text but I do not spend everywaking hour studying. So, yes you can get good grades without killing yourself. I still get anxious and doubt myself before tests like everyone else. I didn't study for my NET test either. I didn't even know people studied for it I just went in and took it. On the other hand I am not at all athletic and sometimes can be a bit clumbsy. Everyone has their own strengths.

Ummmmm...yeah.......the only people I knew in nursing school who didn't study were the one's who flunked out. The material is very hard. SO, they must have some type of mystical powers that the rest of us don't. I wouldn't worry about them. SO, what. You have to study. I did and most of the other people I work with had to also. I think they may be pulling your chain a little here. Just focus on yourself. SOme people find it entertaining to demean others to make themselves feel better. But, I'd be curious to see how they do on boards.

Umm WOW  This post just reeks of judgemental ideas. In one post you called us liars who like to yank chains, people who would flunk out because the only people you know who didn't study flunked out and said that we might be people who happens to entertain themselves by demeaning others. I graduated with high honors in both classes and lectures. I didn't flunk out. And I did little if any studying.

Nope, no mystical powers, just one of the luckier people who were "blessed" for lack of a better word with the ability to listen and retain info without having to read word for word from a text book, Skimming over it, just looking for bold print, italicized words, words in colors etc, worked well to reinforce the oral lecture.

I know for myself, I am not yanking anyones chain when I said I passed with great grades with little studying.

I do not get entertainment from demeaning other (unlike your post where YOU are demeaning those of us who posted about little studying...JUDGE much?) I kept my grades to myself, never telling people that I didn't study for hours and hours like they did. I often tutored others who needed the extra help, I was always the "cheerleader" when people were down on themselves and their grades by trying to get them to see the bright side, telling them they could and would get through the class, and trying to cheer then up. I never, ever once gloated or bragged about mine and always congradulated them on their good grades.

Oh and to entertain your curiosity, I took and passed my Boards, thank you very much.

I have to admit I barely cracked the book to study for exams and I felt really guilty about it too but there was just way too much info and I found myself overloaded!

So instead I studied the lecture material in detail, made flashcards, did hundreds of NCLEX questions on the subject matter, and only used the book to clarify and look up concepts I had trouble with. This worked well for me and I am an honors student. I have noticed the students that read everything can get overwhelmed with feeling they have to memorize everything too and there's no way to retain all of that info.

I think the bottom line is to find what study methods work for you in school and then stick to that. Since what you are doing works for you then keep doing it. :)

I have to study a lot to get my good grades......... Im a smart girl, but man oh man I really study my buns off.

I admire those who dont have to study much and can easily retain info from lectures. There was a lady in my class who always did pretty well, and she always told me she mainly studied from just paying good attention in class.

My mind does NOT work like that at all. I really have to try to retain it.

I do have to say, I'm quite jealous of those who are able to do well without tons of studying.... it would save me about a week of my time! :)

I also studied very little in nursing school. I was a lot younger then and my brain worked a lot faster and I could remember things after reading or hearing things only one time. My mom was a nurse and she talked shop at home which really was an immense help. I also took a lot of science classes etc. while in high school
