Anyone experience this

Some stuff I just can't paraphrase I don't know why, I look up the definition and I still can't paraphrase it.

Like homeostasis for example. I have to memorize the definition because I can't put it in my own words.

Anyone experience this, I hope it doesn't effect nursing because I know what it means, just don't know how to explain in own words.

I can explain complex things, I just have no idea why this happens for some things

I struggled with this for the longest time - only now am I actually able to paraphrase with my own words. I still cringe when I hear myself say my own version of a definition (because I want to be as accurate and precise as possible), but I think I'm learning to ease up on myself. It took challenging myself to tutor others for me to learn how to actually explain things. Everyone is different, but it *might* help you to try to sit down with someone and have them ask you what different things mean and how things work VAGUELY, then work your way to better wordings later. It's just my opinion, hope it helps! Keep working at it, eventually it'll pay off.

Haha...homeostasis, to me, means "it's all good" - LOL! I wouldn't worry too much. I am a total nerd and love pathophysiology; I'm a bookworm. I have a great friend who is pretty much the opposite; she has all the "real world" knowledge I sometimes lack. She knows what needs to be done, but sometimes her description of a possible UTI is more like, "Hey, that patient's got somethin' going on down there!" :lol2:

It cracks me up, but it gets the job done! It takes all types in nursing :p

I guess it's fine if the patient or questioner allows me to stutter first. Btw Lol, I'm clumsy too. Yea, explaining does help. I got this huge problem where I can't explain in my head or really think like a brick stops me from thinking. So I kind of have to talk first and stutter. Probably my A.D.D

Maybe this will help. Think about how you would take a complicated definition and explain it to a 10 year old. This makes you cut the bigger words out and allows you to get your point across in Your Own Words!

That's what I do for many concepts. I attempt to explain them to my kids and if they're not too freaked out by what I've explained to them, I have them tell me what I've just told them. Works like a charm.

How about you try to remember it in pictures if you can't easily remember it otherwise. Like for homeostasis you can picture one of those weight-balance scales in your head, then that might trigger you to automatically think of balance and equilibrium when you see the word homeostasis. There are a lot of little tricks that can help. Acronyms got me through A&P.

I come up with sayings to remember thing's, songs to remember things to, and phrases. It makes no sense to anyone but me. I've had people ask me how I get good grades or how I remember something and I tell them and they look at me like I have 4 heads. I guess whatever works for you to get you through and get a good grade works!
