Is anyone else scared of failing?

Nursing Students General Students

Published

After working my butt off for a year and studying day and night, I finally got my acceptance letter and I am starting in January. I was so happy the first few days, but now I am getting anxious.

I'm a good student, so I'm not as worried about the academics, but what if I can't do any of the skills? We learned to take blood pressure in my A&P 2 lab and it was hard! I read posts about these make or break skills check-offs and I get scared. I'm afraid that after all this work and sacrifice, I will fail because I can't learn to take blood pressure or give injections.

Am I nuts or does anyone else worry about failing? I guess it's because nursing school is so different than anything I've ever done that I am worried. I was hoping somebody else could relate and tell me I'm not insane.

Thanks!

I was worried about learning all these new skills and it really showed in the beginning of the semester. I fumbled a lot and wasn't very confident. Well, I've spent a lot of time practicing and it's paying off. After a skill check-off the other day, my instructor told me that she thinks I'm doing really well and that she can see a definite change in my confidence from the beginning of the semsester.

So the point I'm trying to make is this: Don't worry! You were smart enough to get into nursing school, and you'll be smart enough to get through it! Just practice those skills and study hard. You will do fine.

Good luck

i was scared to death too. But, you just have to learn to roll with things, and realize that they are not just going to let you fail. the teachers will usually do whatever can to help you. as far as injections go, i just gave my first one tuesday to another student, and after the intitial oh-my-gosh feeling, you get used to it! good luck!

I think everyone fears failing. Just don't dwell on it.

I used to be a vet. asst. and I would start IV's put in Jugular Catheters, and draw blood from Kitties in renal failure.

It's harder to hit animal veins then human (I've hit one human vein) and I'm still nervous about learning. Nervous about the look on the poor patient's face when they see this bumbling nursing student approach them with a sharp object :roll

I just don't dwell on it. Well at least not until writing this reply

You'll do great!:D

Just tell yourself that "Failure is NOT an option." You'll be alright. Best wishes!
