so true...we're moving to Philly and I have no idea how to drive in snow, but first things first!

i live near pittsburgh (east by about 40 miles) and i'm not yet in nursing school. i'm going to a community college near me in the spring to take my chemistry class that i need to hopefully get into nursing school. i'm planning on applying to upmc st. margaret school of nursing and the community college of allegheny county.

if i get in, i'll also have to move to the city. traffic really is crazy. lots of hills, lights, and no beltway like highway.

hey pitt and philly students! well i did get my test results back and i was in the 90th percentile YEAH! soooo now it's just the hurry up and wait game for my letter to arrive for invitation to orientation in april...i guess it will be more like mid march before i get my letter!!!! OY more waiting.

i did love Pitt though. so much to do and OH DO I LOVE IKEA! woo hoo! i spent soooo much money there that weekend! LOL! the driving was a little nerve wrecking, and the highway system into the city was a very different than here in ohio. there were even these signs posted on the highway saing "be aware of aggresive drivers" and "DUI enforement area" and "Do no talilgate" :rotfl: totally cracked me up, if it hadn't been so cold i would have leaned out of the car an snapped some pics!

all in all it was a great trip. my mom came for company and she was like "you had better pass that test i want to come back in april" :rotfl: which cracked me up! she is getting her wish obviously!

---now i have to find employment and a place to live....WONDERFUL!

Hi there,

I am a native Pittsburgher, went to Penn State - State College for my BS in Science and now attend CCAC- North Campus for my ASN.

What type of job are you looking for? Are you looking to get into healthcare as a CNA or Patient Care Tech?

Pittsburgh has the second largest population of elderly people in the United States, we are only behind Dade County, Florida. We have numerous nursing homes and long term care facilities. I'm sure if you were looking to get your foot in the door of health care you would have no problem finding a position in such a facility.

I really think you will enjoy going to school in Pittsburgh. With so many world class health facilities here you will have an excellent opportunity to see and experience cutting edge health care.

You will get used to the driving. I know it's hard but even people that have lived here their whole lives still get lost :)

I would also recommend that when looking for an apartment you try to find something in the "County of Allegheny" and not in the "City of Pittsburgh". The taxes to live in the city are insane and you can find much nicer, cheaper, safer places to live right across the city line. I live in a suburb and am only 10 minutes away from the city. Pittsburgh has a lot of old grand houses that have been divided into a couple apartments. You can often find a nice little apartment like that for a lot less than living in an apartment complex.

Best Wishes and good luck!

Colleen

Thanks Colleen that really helps! any other information would be helpful! i'm really excited and can't wait to find a place and get settled out there. BUT i do have to make sure i'm fully accepted first!

As far as a job goes, i want to take the full-time day classes, so i will need to find something that will be flexible with my schedule!

i'm hoping to get on with UPMC shadyside hospital or one of the UPMC facilities. i have prior CNA experiance, medical front and back office experiance, dermatology, podiatry, and LTC experiance. though for the past 2 years i have been out of healthcare so i'm not sure what is going to happen.

thanks again...oh and what are the best most fun things to do in Pitts???

I'm not that familiar with where the school in Shadey Side is but Shadey Side itself is a pretty nice area as well as the South Side and Strip District for shops, restaurants, bars, etc.

You should check out our new stadiums. You can get Pirates tickets pretty cheap, you will probably not be able to get Steeler tickets as they are most coveted by Season Ticket Holders and are rather expensive.

Down by the new Stadiums is the Science Center (has an OmniMax) and Sports Works complexes (like the science center but centered around sports, physics, etc.). These are all within walking distance of each other.

Downtown is not much good for shopping but if you have a car or can figure out the bus route to the "Water Front" you could spend a whole weekend there. It is a relatively new shopping and entertainment area. They have a Lowe's Theater, Dave and Busters, tons of places to shop and lots of good restaurants.

Here is a link to their website

There is also "Station Square" across the river from the stadiums. There are ferries that run from the Stadiums over to Station Square so if you went to a game and wanted to do something afterward you could try that. They have a Hard Rock Cafe a couple other places to eat and some stores but I don't think it's that good of a place to go shopping, there aren't that many stores and they are usually over priced. There is also a bar called Chauncey's that caters to the baby boomer crowd and those that like Disco. It's not a bad place to go if you get the urge to dance disco and can keep the old men away. :uhoh21:

If your mom likes disco and dancing maybe that would be a good place to take her :)
