What expenses are tax deductible for advancing your nursing career? I am in the process of applying for LVN-RN bridge programs and have been wondering this.

Also, is there a maximum amount which is tax deductible?

Thanks in advance! :D

i am not a certified public accountant and do not do taxes for anyone but myself. i can only share the types of expenses that i have claimed for my own personal taxes. i do keep receipts for all texts, journals, memberships, ceus or university courses that i pay for out of pocket. also i keep up with any classes that i physically go to such as conventions or additional education courses. in those instances i also keep records of any travel expenses, hotel rooms, gasoline costs, and meals that are associated with the travel. i keep records for my university classes and tuition and any texts that i purchase and need for those classes and have to buy on my own.

i keep up with any expenses or gas costs with traveling to and from the college or university. hope this helps at least some.

Does your employer cover any costs? I agree that you would have to consult a tax professional. Keep receipts for everything school related.

In my state I was able to write off my mileage when I drove from school to work or vice versa I can't remember now.

The problem is that I can't write off ANY of my student loans because I earn too much! Grr. My tax consultant was able to find a few loopholes when I first graduated my LPN-RN but that's it. Now I can just write off union dues, uniforms, and anything I spend money on that's work related.

i would keep track of school costs, books, anything extra you buy to help you study (other books), scrubs/shoes for school. you may be eligible for a school deduction. i know i got a standard deduction a few years ago for being in school. i don't know all the ins and outs of it. but surely keep track of your spending on things like that. also keep reciepts for nclex exam. thats an expensive one that you should be able to write off and every time you update cpr. all these things are assuming that your job isn't already covering/ helping you pay for these.

I am an LPN living in a southern state however, I'm able to file all out of pocket expenses related to work and education. For example; uniforms, gas, car repairs, (tires & brakes) online courses such as CEU's, CPR certification and fees for license renewal. I'm working on my RN degree from excelsior and I have been able to file books, study guide modules that I purchased from ISTUDYSMART.COM and all the extra materials that I need to further my education.
