What do you like/dislike about being a nurse ?

Nurses General Nursing

i am going be a nurse when i am older (i am a junior in high school) and i am just curious what nurses have to say about their field of work. thanks a bunch ! :)

I like the fact that I work with very smart people who constantly challenge me to do and be my best. That has resulted in a lot of personal growth.

I dislike some of the politics involved in organizations, but that is found in all types of organizations, not just hospitals. I dislike lazy people (nurses, patients, aides, anybody) because they usually infringe on my time.

I must say, if I have one more layperson's initial response to "I'm a nurse" be "Gross! All those bed pans!" I'll find a full one and throw it at them! Such a small part of my day and such a large part of the public perception

I know what you mean. I'm not sure how much of it is really the public's perception vs. some people are just a-holes that enjoy putting down other people. These people would find something smarta$$ed to say about your career no matter what it was.

What I like - the flexibility of the profession. If one day you wake up and discover you dread going to work and hate what you are doing, you can do something COMPLETELY different and still be working as a nurse.

What I dislike - In the words of the ANA: "Too many nurses are becoming patients themselves due to preventable back injury."

The idiotic "customer service" mentality adopted by healthcare.

I Like helping people. I enjoy the occaisional crisis/adrenalin rush. I enjoy the job security. I enjoy working with intelligent people.

I dislike puke, phlegm, poop, and pee.

Eeewwwww. I can stand the whole of everything.....No Snot...
