The other day when calling my friends at tech support to reset my forgotten password yet again, I wondered how many passwords for work other nurses needed to remember.

All passwords are changed at certain intervals, except when I get them reset.

There is one for the electronic charting, computer order entry, work email, lab results, staffing scheduling program, patient acuity program, hospital intranet, and the Pyxis machine.

I claim 8 work passwords to remember for work.

How many passwords for the computer to you use?

I think I had two? One for the IDX system and one for PIXIS. I generally used the same word and then changed the number at the end every six months.

I have a list on my phone of all my work passwords. I counted 6! I am so forgetful and having to change my passwords every couple of months doesn't help! I usually stick with the same password and go up/down in numbers.

1-internal website/email

2-regional electronic charting system

3-provincial electronic records

4-ER department tracking screen

5-scheduling program

6-narcotic cupboard/med carts

7-staff locker room

8-staff washroom

3 of those don't change, 2 the system allows me to immediately change back to the same password after the mandatory change q3 months, the last 3 have strict compliance rules and cannot be the same as any password you have used in the last year. I keep them on a list so I don't forget!

we have a system that allows you to sign in once a day and thereafter you swipe your badge barcode and never log in again to any of the programs we use. Really nice.Talk to your IT department. The systems knows all your codes. You only need one sign on for the whole day. It expires in 13 hours, so if you work over that you have to sign in again. Big deal.
