Is it too late to become a nurse?

Nurses General Nursing

Hello everyone,

I have a questions and a concern. I am 26- soon to be 27- and I have decided to go back to my studies to become a nurse. I just had my first child 3 weeks ago and it really made me take a second look at where I'm at and what I'm doing. When I was 22, I began to study to become an EMT. However, I took up a simple job in the mortgage industry while I studied and it eventually sucked me in. I left my studies and stayed in the mortgage business, but I am SICK of it. I regret what I did. Now I wonder? With a total of four years (2 for my pre-reqs & 2 for the nursing courses) am I too old to have a change in mind? By the time I finish I'll be 31. Most poeple jump into this at their early 20's. Will I still have a chance to make this my final choice? Your feedback and encouraging words are welcome.

Thanks

Alex

hi im in the prenursing program and i just turned 27 last month and judging from my classmates in the same prenursing track im closer to the younger crowd. their are 50 yr olds who are in the classes right along with us, so my advice to you is go for what you want because the time is going to pass regardless of what you do with it!

I am 25 and I graduated college with a BS in Psychology. I am interested in going back to pursue my AAS to be a RN. I have been working with individuals with disabilities and I work closely with two nurses. We aim to provide the highest care we can for our clients. I have slowly taken an interest in this. Since I have my psych degree, I am hoping I could finish nursing rather quickly. I intend to work and do school and clinicals at night and on the weekends. I love working with people and helping them and sitting behind a desk all day is definitely not for me. I tend to enjoy the direct care and direct contact with the clients I serve and help them and interact with them for whatever the case may be to ensure their needs are met, rather than typing on a computer all day. I feel funny being 25 and just discovering that I should have gone to school for something else.

It's NEVER too late to go back to school......until you stop breathing! I was 38 when I graduated, and one of my classmates was 47. So go for it!! Don't waste another year doing something you don't like.....life's too short for crappy jobs.

I'm replying to your signature...the song you are quoting in the signature...my grandmother loves that song... she's 90.

Do you have a nursing program in your area that has classes/clinicals evenings and weekends?

Don't worry about the age thing, with prereqs (I'm assuming that you didn't take Human Anatomy & Physiology for your Psych degree) your nursing education will likely be about three years. You'll be 28 yrs old whether you get your nursing degree or not.....so why not just go for it.

Truly, in my BS, Nursing program most folks are closer to (and many older than) my 41 yrs-old than they are to a "traditional college age."
