Hello NAs!

I work on the ortho unit in a big hospital. I been working there for 1 month. I had a preceptor for a week, after that week Ive been on my own. I don't think I'm doing great. I'm worried after the 90 day evaluation, I'll get fired for poor performance.

It's usually 1 cna to 12 patients. I think I do wonderful with interacting with the patients but I'm usually behind in charting, especially at the end of the shift when I have to give report to the coming CNA. The list goes on with mistakes I make, and on top of that the unit clerk watches everything I do to call me out and talks bad about me to the nurses. I'm new and having a bully already also effects my performance. Sorry for the rant.

Can any of you NAs give me tips and a timeline on what you do to make the job a bit easier?

I'm very confused. Your username says that you're a BSN/RN but you're working as a CNA?

Specializes in CCU, SICU, CVSICU, Precepting & Teaching.

Being given negative feedback after making mistakes is not being bullied. When you're new, you WILL make mistakes and if no one is giving you negative feedback there is no way for you to know what you need to work on. Trust me, you want the negative feedback as soon as possible rather than having it go on a list somewhere that the nurse manager shows you just before she fires you.

You say you're great at interacting with the patients, but you're usually behind with your work. Concentrate on keeping up with your work at the expense of spending time interacting with patients. You don't really have time for long chats until you get your time management up to par.

ASK the nurses and CNAs you're working with what you can do to improve your performance. Take the negative feedback with class and professionalism and use the feedback (no matter how much you dislike the delivery) to improve your practice.
