My boss recently within the last 3 months started a verbal report

instead of using hospital-wide taped report. she says we will all get out on the floor quicker.

well let me tell you it stinks, i work as charge nurse 7p-7a, so not only do i have to give two verbal reports,(i also take an assignment at 11p) no one is ever on time, ect ect. Most of the time i'm clocking out 1 hour later.(believe me 12 hours is long enough)

Boss won't reconsider? Any advice??? anyone giving verbal with ideas?????

A few suggestions:

Keep everything to the point...staff do not want to hear all the little extra's that happened that are not significant to their shift.

Do not allow interuptions while you are talking...you can always ask that if there are any questions that they can be asked following report...this will usually stop the needless chatter and getting off topic from happening

Not to be cold, but if people are late...their loss...you shouldn't have to suffer for it...I would start report on time in order to get your other staff out on the floor if you are giving a report to a group of people. If it's just one person, you might have to ask them to please be there on time because you have places to be as well.

Hope some of these suggestions help...

In addition to the above, ask your manager if you can start the tape recorder as you give verbal report so that those who are late can catch up on their own without delaying everyone else. This may also cut down on off topic chatter as people will know they are being recorded.

create a script and tell people to stick to it.
