so my boyfriend found this lump...

Its a small hard mass (the size of a marble) in his right "love handle" (he'd KILL me if he knew I said that! :chuckle ) anyways, its fairly superficial...maybe about 1/4" deep. He knows he needs to get it checked, but he doesnt have medical insurance (long story about transferring within the company and unfortunately his paper work got messed up somewhere along the way and he cant re-enroll until May)

Has anyone ever seen anything like that? any ideas about what it could be? how bad of an idea would it be to wait until may to get it checked? If he went to the doctor now, what would they most likely do and how much would it be without insurance?

Thanks for the insight!

Rachel

Among several things it could be and one that's non-malevolent is a limpoma, a non-malignant tumor of adipose tissue. The location and size is typical.

While the odds are that it's benign, I would recommend against taking the risk of waiting, attractive though that is. If it does trun out to be something nasty the money you save in the short-term could well be outweighed by the long-term costs...

sound advice indeed. Best wishes to you and your s/o.

I would definitely have this checked out. My husband had a know come up just as you described on his left side. He had his gallbladder taken out a couple of months ago and had the doctor look at it and it is a benign limpoma. The doctor did not do any special tests or anything on it. So, the cost of a doctor's visit would sure be worth the ease of mind of both you and your boyfriend.
