:typingJust wondering, how many pts do you have?

Type unit?

With or without techs/aids?

Do you your break/lunch? Most of the time? Never?

It's hard for me to gage what the floor nurses are REALLY up against right now. I left the floor over 2 years ago.

We "usually" had 5/6 pts on days, 7/8 eves, 10/12 on nights.

Ortho/medical

I work on a renal/respiratory floor. 36 bed unit. On a fully staffed day we have 7 nurses (5:1 with 1 nurse having 6pts) and 5 techs (7pts a piece).. If we start with 7 nurses 1 nurses leaves at 3pm so we all have to pick up a patient. Usually at 5 we drop down to 2 techs. On most days we only have 6 nurses (6:1) ratio. Most of our patients are chronically ill, from nursing homes, bed bound, complete care pts. Today I had 5 pts, picked up 1 at 3pm. 3pts were bed bound, 2pts had chest tubes with epidurals, and the pt i picked up at 3pm was threatening to sue and leave AMA (oh the drama). I had a student with me and a tech. Pretty busy day.. I was behind all morning.. Sent one to the OR and got her back with 2 chest tubes, and epidural, and tons of new orders... Oh well I made it...

30 private rooms. 6:1 days, cna 1:15, nights 7:1 and same amount of techs. Acuity increasing daily, getting pts from ICU, trachs etc, because they are short of beds. Depends on the tech as to how much help you get, on weekends, common to have 1 or 0 if they call off. Lpns cant admit, do post op evals, as well as push narcs and we have a lot of narc pushes. One resource/charge tied up covering that. Computer charting with very detailed assessment requirements. Lunch, wolfed down. Been leaving after 8pm, thats a good day, 9.30 even 10 becoming pretty common, no matter how hard you try, charting is hard to get to during the shift. As soon as you discharge they are wheeling up a post op or ER pt. Acuity means zip. All about numbers. Atmosphere: every man for himself.
