Rectal Tubes

Has anyone ever heard of placing a rectal tube to wall suction and/or do you have a policy at your facility for this?

I actually had an order yesterday, rectal tube with LIS! I used the Flexi-Seal and set up suction to the irrigation port. The MD wanted to decompress all of the abdominal gas. I was quite nervous, as I didn't want to damage the mucosal lining, nor did I really have a way to know if the abdominal gas was being suctioned per say.

I did ask the physician if there was a less invasive method, ex. Gas-X/simethcone & he insisted on a rectal tube with LIS. I will be curious to see if this system indeed make a difference!

Thank you to all that have responded. Your input has been invaluable.

My experience with them has not been too sucessful! lol I had a couple of patients when I worked medical that had such continuious liquid stool that there was no way to keep them clean, even for 5 min and there skin was a mess so we requested an order for one. Well lets just say it didn't work as I had hoped! lol The patient was an elderly woman and well lets just say that the size of the tube was standard and yet next to her it looked ummmm, how do I say.....like a pediatric tube! lol guess things get stretched out down there after 85 years of pooping! lol so only about a quarter of it was going into the tube and the rest around the outside! Now both times it was just connected to a foley/gravity. Never heard of connecting it to suction. Sounds interesting and kinda painful! ouch!

I have NEVER EVER heard of that. Suck that mucosa right outa there! However, I have been known to use suction to help with the clean up of a particularly large mass of liquid poo.
