As Nurses, I'm sure we have been asked to give medical advice to our neighbors, friends, and family. Of course, we are always available if they need us, but we certainly know that their healthcare providers are the ones who can properly advise them. But, how often are we asked to treat the family, friend or neighbor pet? Has this happened to you and how did you respond?

I've been asked to give immunizations to other people's pets. Don't mind, but by the time you mix the diluent, etc., the one needle they give you from the pet store is d-u-l-l! So getting it thru the animals tough skin hurts! I asked them to let me know next time so I can get an extra needle from the hospital.

I've never been asked about the care of a pet. I would be uncomfortable with that, and immediately tell them to see the vet.

This doesn't bother me right now being a Licensed Veterinary Technician, but I am concerned if this really happens to nurses. We literally specialize in animals.
