Pot Smoking and Nursing

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Im angry.

I work for a small clinic in Northern CA. There are three RN's on staff at all time. Recently our Office Manager decided to start drug testing of all staff including Doctors. Well, one of the Nurses I work with came back positive for marijuana use. My thought was "Well she should not be doing it anyways" I was actually glad to see her get in trouble.

After discusing it with the Doctors they came up with a new unwritten policy. They will overlook marijuana. Basiclly, you can smoke all the pot you want but just on the weekends not during "on call" days. I questioned one of the Doctors about it and his response was to "chill"

Does this seem wrong to anybody else? Do Nurses really smoke pot on there days off?

I know which one I am....

and that is why I'm able to sleep at night, somewhat comfortably instead of having my hypocracy eat away at me every day

:)

cheers

I know who I am also.........thx for asking las vegas.......

this is in first person all.........

I'm sure most of us would agree that if a nurse is found to be positive on a drug screen that she/he should be fired. I don't think that is the argument here. The argument is whether or not it is ANYONE's business is a nurse smokes pot on her own time, or drinks to excess on her own time.

Just as if a nurse reported to work drunk. It is the same scenario.

The argument is about whether we should be judging a nurse based on her lifestyle.

And there is nothing wrong with jerking off in the bathroom, except while it's done at work, or done while looking at kiddy Media at work, or Media period at work. And some religions think jerking off is a sin. So my point is, there is more to be debated than pot smoking. So, like Wendy said, those of you who are quick to judge, take a look at your own lifestyle because I guarantee you we could pick you apart and find you just as filthy.

I didn't decided on who, what, or when pot smoking should or shouldn't be done. Society or citizens in this country who elect legislators to create laws have done this. If you disagree with what you can do on your own time using illegal drugs, go out and try to change the laws instead of accusing someone that they are judgemental. I'm not a judge who can sentence a person for illegal drug usage, but those who can will not hesitate slapping you with charges that could affect your life in many ways.

I'm always amazed at tactics in debate that are way off topic.

The point is your are way off topic with the judgemental topics.

It comes down to do you respect the law or don't you. Unless laws change, it is hard to argue it is ok to use illegal drugs imo.

I respect the law.....I do not ever intend to be way off topic.....but by way of my personality.....i just can't help myself.........but i have been labelled already and won't bore you with the labels.........

but to say if i bore.....please hit ignore.....

what i think this thread has digressed tooo is this.........

1) nurses are also human.........and yes even the most professional person in the world.....should be allowed to have their time to their selves..............i mean come on...............

Professional---------------smofessional..............etc...........

doc's are people too, nurses are people too, the president is people too.............police are people too.........

i am not trying to say that those of us who choose to place ourselves in the position of a more professional profession.....should consider this also in our personal lives...........

like duhhhhhhhhh!!!!! of course we should and the 99.9% of us do.................so give this a rest...........

maybe a change in thread to who is perfect here and who is not should be started.......cause i ain't perfect 24/7

but i am right on target when i am working.....

and maybe my addiction is just walking along the river 12 hours solid in my off time.......like what is wrong with that.....

someone here could find fault i am sure.......

To me it's not a question, at work I am responsible for people's lives, & I do my level best to care for them. What I do in my rare time off is my business. If a nurse is stupid enough to work impaired he or she deserves the max for punishment, like it or not we reflect on each other.....

actually mcl4 we were not way off topic in our responses, though I do agree the thread has gone off on a tangent, but the original post wasnt about the legality of smoking pot like you stated it was, it was about nurses who smoke pot and how it affects their job and if they should be reprimanded for doing so, even if they do it on their time off......

yes marijuana is illegal, no one is debating that.. we may debate the issue of whether or not to legalize it , but this debate is about nurses who smoke pot

not about legislation or judgement of others

the point being made is that any addiction of any kind can affect nursing care, and I agree that if we pick apart any one of us , some holier than thou person can and will find something to scoff at

cheers

It seems really strange that testing was done, and then no action was taken. What an odd management strategy. If they want to go with the "don't ask, don't tell" method, they sure went about it the wrong way.

You have to go back to the basic fact and the fact it is an illegal substance. Most employers will not find it ok for a person to use illegal drugs or be involved with any other illegal activity.
