Nurses, Would you go into nursing if you had to do it all over again?

Nurses General Nursing

Hi.

I am considering going back to school for nursing. I've been a CNA for 11 years and have worked in various aspects of nursing. I enjoy the patient contact and the caring/helping part of nursing.

Not to mention the flexibility that I have in this field.

I have many concerns, though. The high patient loads, the politics, the backbiting, the sad and depressing things that I will encounter, etc. What if I make a mistake? This is someone's LIFE!

Are all of these feelings normal?

Would like to hear from other registered nurses who would or would not considering nursing again.

Thanks much!

I can say that most RNs here make more money than teachers. I am sure you could also find LPNs making more than teachers. Of course, there are some teachers making good money, but those are the teachers who are very close to retirement (it's all based on seniority here). A new teacher (with four years of college)makes about the same as a new LPN (with one year diploma) here.

Of course teachers in private schools make better money, but by far the majority of teachers here are not doing that well.

Are you a teacher?

No!!

Yes, I would do it all over again. I've had my struggles in nursing, as everyone does, but I don't know of anything else I'd rather do, except perhaps for being a writer (well, I already am, but I mean one who can make a living from it). :)

Happy Anniversary MJLRN97!!! :)

Yes, I would do it again. Sure it is stressful and management can be crap. But what I always have wanted with my life is to make a difference, to help. As a nurse I do that every day and it gives me a lot in return. I have worked in different areas but I love ER because of the adrenaline and teamwork.

I would not be a nurse. If I could do It over again I would be a physician , radiologist or an anesthesiologist instead. Maybe in my next life I'll get it right.

Go for it! We need you and the patients need you. The fact that you are asking these questions is a good sign that you are ready . So here is the quick and dirty, We do have high patient loads you'll learn to manage, there are politics and backbiting in trash pick-up, watch the news on any given day we live around depressing things, and you will make mistakes, fessing up and learning from them is the golden egg, and as long as you remember your last statement you will be fine, because it is someones life and it not yours its theres and it is prescious. GO FOR IT, YOU'LL DO GREAT.:D

As sad as it is to say, no, I wouldn't do it again. I went into nursing school in 1985 thinking it was a noble and respected career. It is not. As stated before me, the pay is not worth what you are exposed to (not just diseases but the emotional and physical things), most doctors don't respect your input and/or opinion and other nurses are all to eager to tear you down the moment you turn your back. I'm 37 and have been seriously thinking about CRNA school. I'm just tired! Good luck.

WOW, this is sad and I wish you had a better experience. However nursing is a noble and respected profession, that is not to say that we do not get disrespected, the american people have said time and time again that we are the most trusted profession of all above MDs. We do still have MDs that think we are handmaidens and we do tend to be very hard on our peers but we need not forget that we are HIGHLY TRAINED PROFESSIONALs and the public is looking to us to get safe care and to have advocacy in the presence of Knowledge Deficit. We are exposed to alot and we do not seem to make what we are worth, but NURSING is still a great way to go. :wink2:

Go for it!

I am also going thru school to become an RN this will be my 3rd and final? carear change. I was in IT before it busted and have been in retail managment for the last 5 years. The old saying the grass is always greener is true in any carear. Don't expect all of your troubles to go away just because you change jobs, they won't. Be realistic about nursing and you will go far

Good Luck
