I think that what you all do is awesome! I had some fantastic nurses when I was in the hospital. When I was young that's what I wanted to be is a nurse, but sadly due to health issues I can't, anyways, What in your opinion is the best thing about being a nurse? And what's the not so great thing about being a nurse?

Awwww, that is the nicest thing!! Thank you! And I love being a nurse because I like the clinical.emotional.critical thinking all mushed together to do what is best for my patients. I like to be intuitive. Specifically, I love to start IV's, I love wounds, I don't like mucus (story for another day HAHA), and psych/detox/hospice and Er nursing are perhaps my favorite. I like a peds thrown into the mix every once in awhile. I don't like the bureacacy that happens when nurse's intentions are good ones, or when I lose a patient I have come to admire. So you have to develop some thick skin, and bathrooms you can cry in. Again, thanks for sharing, it is nice when I hear that someone's experience is so positive!! Best wishes!!

You're welcome! I know that your job can be hectic and chaotic at times, but I really admire how nurses can get through it!I just want to thank you all for what you do, I may not know any of you, but I know what you do is appreciated by a lot of people!!

What a wonderful post! Thank you! I work in long term care and I love getting to know the residents. I'm happy when a resident has an issue and I can keep them in the facility as opposed to sending them out to the hospital. That means that I was able to use my nursing skills to improve the situation in-house. Sending these folks to the ER is frequently traumatic, if possible, we want to keep them in a familiar environment.

I love being able to give support and comfort to the family whose loved on is not doing well or actively dying. There is a special place in my heart for my hospice residents. Just the other day a woman came up to me (not at work), whose mother I had cared for before she passed away. The woman told me that I had been one of her mother's favorite nurses. I can't even begin to tell you how much that meant to me. Those are the kinds of things I love.

As for what I don't like - it boils down to not enough time to do what needs to be done. All the interuptions take up time. All the PRN meds, take up time. All the family member issues, take up time. When a resident falls or has a health issue, it takes up time. If I could bottle time and sell it, I'd make fortune.

Some of the nurses at the LTC facitlity where my father was, when hospice was called in, were incredibly sweet. They were not only attentive, which I am sure took a lot of their time, but sensitive to the needs of our family. THEY saw to it, that we the family, did not forget to eat and rest while we were waiting for the inevitable to happen.

It all makes a difference in people's lives.

first of all, thank you on behalf of all nurses for your compliments. on regards to your first question, it's a bit difficult for me to state only one thing that i like of being a nurse. having said that, let's see... first i would say the inner satisfaction one feels that cannot be explained when a pt. is in need of our nursing care and we are able to accommodate or easy their suffering. in addition, share the joy of the success of a critical operation or procedure once is over, and later on the pt. returns to the hospital or sends a card to say thank you. furthermore, be the shoulder or the hand extended for those who have lost their loved ones and offer them our support and guidance. on the other hand, to answer the 2nd. part of your question, i find it difficult at times to be a nurse when our arms are tied, by the red tape that surrounds at any given moment the health industry, also hearing how some administrations don't realize the importance of nurse to pt. ratios, in order to provide a high caliber of nursing care. lastly, i hope i have met with satisfaction your concerns regarding your enquiry...as i wish you the best in all of your future endeavors....aloha~
