Now I am confused!!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello all, I am currently a pre-nursing student, at this present time I will be ready to apply to nursing schools this fall. I live in ca in the bay area and it is very competitive to even get in. For the past three weeks I have been volunteering at my son's elementary school. I have been helping the speech therapist and I am having an amazing time! I love it. I am working with k-5. We see the same students weekly and I cant explain the joy I get from the progress they are making. Some are autistic and some arent, some just have speech delays and the like. But I really like it. My family expects me to be a nurse since I have come this far but I'm kind of rethinking it, I dont want to let anyone down. I like nursing also it has always been a life long dream. I have been taking my prereqs forever it seems. But now I am very confused. :crying2: Sorry I just needed to let that out since I havent told anyone about it.

Thanks all for the wonderful advice!! I have made my decison. Although I will be finish with my nursing prereqs this semester I will also be done with my associates degree so I will transfer this fall to CSU East Bay under the Speech Pathology and Audiology major. They have a wonderful program, they also have a Speech and Hearing clinic on campus. As some of the previous posts said you do have to have a masters degree to get your licsense but you can work as an assistant therapist with a B.S. degree while you are in graduate school. I have done my research, they are in very high demand, they money is good depending on what type of facility you work in. They even have traveling speech therapists just like nurses! I have told my family, mom wasnt too pleased but the rest of my family was happy about my decision. EKSTASIS its funny you should mention Texas because that is where I plan on relocating in a few years:yeah:

I would think the prereqs would be amost the same anyhoo! :D I am proud of you for making a hard decision. I don't think you will regret it. I have known too many people who really don't want to be in nursing though they are kind, compassionate, caring and smart. They either get out or they hate it. Speech therapists are very in demand.

Good luck.

Not trying to rain on the parade or anything, just want to bring some clarity to that.

I was good friends with a speech therapist at one of my travel positions. We compared where we wanted to go and the housing our companies gave us all the time. She, my wife and myself had dinner once and even considered trying for the same location (my wife so wants a ski buddy).

As we were discussing places we wanted to go, it came up that traveling was just a little different for her. Apparently, it takes a VERY LONG time to get licensed in other states as a speech therapist. If I remember right, she said almost a year. So, most travel speech therapists apply to 3 or 4 states that interest them at one time and then are limited to those places for most of their traveling days.

Just telling you what I've been told so if travel is part of your plans you'll know to start the process very early.

hi....being confused in your situation means Your not yet totally achieved when it comes to what you really like....i think if you really want to be a nurse follow your dreams!!!and if spending time with some special children makes you happy then go on..the important thing is that you love what you are doing...but be sure to make your parents proud of you because that will make them feel satisfied and maybe in a surprise your parents will support you all the way....goodluck to you!!!:hpygrp:
