New nurse where do I start

Nurses General Nursing

I'm looking for some feedback. I graduated with my lpn in 2014 and have worked at a nursing home since. I'm looking to change areas now that i became an RN and have been thinking about maternity. My problem is that I have no hospital experience other then school clinicals; so do I try for a job right away in maternity or should I look for something in med/surg for awhile til I get some more experience in a hospital setting?

Thanks

I would say that depends on the job market where you are. Is it a saturated market where new grads don't have much choice or one of the pockets of shortages where you can get a job in maternity? Check out job listings- are there postings that are allowing new grads to apply? Definitely have a fallback plan in case you can't get a maternity job.

I agree with the above advice. I feel like life is too short to spend much time not doing what you care about, but we are certainly at the mercy of what jobs are available to us. Look at maternity jobs and apply if you qualify, but keep an open mind and be willing to start in med-surg and transfer when you can.
