Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello! New guy here...finally a nursing board with more than 14 members.

Anyways im a 23/m/canadian and considering nursing as a career and entering my first year introductory courses in july. Intended on Physical education but nursing seems more interesting. Why i finally decided to take nursing?

-demand

-interest in human anatomy

-co-workers and classmates will mostly be female :D

-pay seems good (lots of ppl disagree from what ive read)

43 grand for new grads over here

- medical/surgery looks like a lot of fun

I'd like to know how nursing has been to you, how you found nursing school and what books or areas would your recommend for me to read ahead? I need an edge. No sugar coating plz, straight honest answers wanted.

From deep in the heart of Texas.

Well Mr nurse-gigolo 69. Im a male nurse who has been and endured in this field for many years. Countin as a Corpsman, Tech, orderly, medic, running an ambualnce service, working numerous hospitals over the years. Ive been donig this for a little over 3 decades now.

I cant recommend nursing any stronger as a chosen field slash way of life, because thats what it becomes to you. I cant think of haveing lived a richer or more filling life. So is nursing is what you want, go for it.

But take a little friendly advice, Lose the gigolo and the 69 in your name, and grow up. There is no room for that in this field.

good luck to you

Keep it in the short grass yall

teeituptom

OH NO! ((((blushing)))

Didn't connect the Gigolo and 69 til now, Tom, (had a senior moment there) but guess you got the same initial impression as me and Mario... I think you gave the young'un great advice, too!!

And Tom, you remind me of a nursing school friend---you didn't by any chance get your RN diploma at St. Lukes in '81 did ya? I lost track of my ol' school buddy Tom but last I heard he was in Texas somewhere.....

Kellie,

Maybe you could use a term other than "old"?? You may not be able to help someone else's feelings, but you can certainly use some sensitivity and purposely try NOT to insult folks.

I've been a nurse for 9 years, and at 34, certainly don't consider myself old. Nor do I consider my co-workers, who happen to range in age from 28 to 62, "old"... it's all a matter of perspective, and experience. As mattsmom said, you'd better thank your lucky stars if you look up in the ICU and see an "old" nurse caring for you instead of some perky little new grad who can only theorize about what to do...

Just venting here...

couldn't agree more SICU queen.....old is bandied about too much.........as well as young'un, etc.........

used to talk about oneself.........if you choose, but others use their names or what they have asked you to call them by.....unless there is a deeperconnection/friendship/etc.......

i.e. i am micro

gigolo69.............now I will go against what i just said, but I am using your "name of choice".........try "gig" and please lose the 69.........some days human beings have sex, think sex.....and some days they don't.................(sexuality is a part of life.....), but

it truly doesn't belong out there in the glorious trenches of nursing.........you know the grand and glorious career you are choosing.............

actually love nursing........but you gotta love it.........or in micro humble opinion.......there are other ways to make a $$$...

so gig'.........sorry i didn't wait for your permission to change your name here.........you are ALL RIGHT!!!!! AND NOW AN oldtimer's opinion.........(micro here).........take what you need from threads like this and leave the rest behind.........

great luck and career/nursing field, gig

teeituptom......

great post.........

it is great to hear from a longtime nurse that has been in "all aspects of nursing" as you state.......

it does become you.........

some of the best nurses i have had the honor to work with are

men

lpn's

women

new grad's

veteran nurses

veterans

cna's

I,micro am not as fluent and eloquent or complete in my speech here on the threads as many here...........

enjoyed reading teeituptom's take on nursing.....and advice to new XY nurses.........

reminds me that we all teach everyday by what we do, say or how we act.........we are either teaching badly or well.....but people learn from us.........

On the contrary, Micro, you have a great way of gettin' at things, and a very positive attitude IMO! Love your posts and everyone elses too! Trite thought, but such a boring world it would be if we all had the same thoughts and opinions, eh?

You have a point about the terminology -- 'grouchy, old, dinosaur nurses' and the 'newbie, younguns', and baby nurses'.....maybe we're hurting feelings and should stop the labels, I agree. Although it started out as teasing, maybe we go too far and cause more divisiveness.

Shall we all call a truce?

mattsmom81,

TRUCE IS DECLARED.........even i knew of no war.............peace is always best~!!!!!!!!!!!!

love all,

micro
