Needlestick injury

I am really upset and worried because I had a needlestick injury this morning while taking blood. The patient suddenly jerked his arm while blood is flowing to the collection set and the needle pricked my left thumb (under the fingernail). I felt it so bad. I didnt see any blood and washed it. But then there was blood under the fingernail.

Also, the charge nurse blamed me instead! She told me "That's why you got the needlestick because you rush!" When in fact she's always the one who gets nervous and finishes late. What the heck. I felt so offended. It's like blaming a rape victim that she got raped! I am so mad. I was shocked! And she said it in the nurses station when the doctors and the other nurses were coming in. Huhu

still waiting for the results. The patient hasnt been tested before.

While I wouldn't compare it to rape, the charge nurse reacted rather silly. I had a needle stick a few years back while pregnant. It was definitely my fault but at that moment I needed a plan of action and reassurance. The follow up about how and when it happened should and did occurred after I had reported to employee health. Thankfully it sounds as though the patient agreed to testing (mine did as well) which makes it was easier on you getting to avoid taking preventative meds. Try not to worry till there is a positive test result to worry about. You washed immediately after which was the best thing you could do and you reported it.

I am more concerned about where you work than the needle stick. Your charge nurse is more of a danger to you and patient care than a dirty needle!

It almost seems like a HIPAA violation for her to comment about your injury in front of others?

I would talk to her in private and using theraputic "I" comments tell her your upset. Maybe even ask her boss to come to the meeting.
