In May I was accepted into a BSN program that starts this fall. I am taking summer classes to get ahead. A month ago, I was offered a part time job at my school's medical center. Yes, I've got to work nights and evenings, and weekends, but I'm willing to do it. The pay is decent and the experience would look great on my resume. Last week, the medical center changed my job and required a very long training session that conflicts with my summer classes. I have tried to be flexible, but these sessions could require me to either miss presentations and exams that would carry a big portion of my grade and would be difficult, if not, impossible for me to reschedule. I have to attend every single one of them or else I would not allowed to work. Their next session occurs during the first week of my nursing classes. I would miss EVERY SINGLE ONE of my classes, INCLUDING clinicals.

This job is starting to make me think that it is not worth it. I'm not willing to miss a bunch of nursing classes AND a clinical for a part time gig. I could return back to my desk job, but, it too is starting to become inflexible.

What should I do? Is this stress of trying to complete 9 days worth of training (8:00-4:30) worth it? Is working in Nursing school a smart idea?

Thanks in advance! This is really causing me some unneeded stress.

working in nursing school can be done.

(many, many of us here did. i'd have had better grades if i hadn't been working until midnight three nights a week and every vacation day, but i graduated with a decent gpa anyway.)

flunking a class in your major because you had to miss it for orientation to a short-term job... can be dumb.

keep your eyes on the prize-- a short-term job ain't it.

i agree that flunking a major class because of a ridiculously long training program for a part time job is stupid. my mom proposed for me to miss those classes and try to make up lecture, but i doubt i could make up a lecture and a clinical. i believe it is very important to start off nursing school on the right track, and missing every single class isn't worth it.

i told them that i was a nursing student and the days i would be available, and it seems as though they didn't take things into consideration. that surprises me, considering that this is a student position. :/

My honest opinion....find another job. I worked during nursing school part time, and that was enough to drop my grades. I did not, however, miss classes or exams or clinicals due to my job. You have to think about your priorities here. What's more important, school or your job? To me it was school, I ended up getting a different job halfway through school because the first one wasn't accomodating my schooling anymore. I think you need to sit down with the management and tell them your schedule again. If the really want you there, they will make the needed adjustments. If they don't, I'd say start looking for something else.

You might be able to miss nursing lecture classes, but you can not miss clinicals. The job has to go, unless you can put nursing school first.

My nursing school would not have allowed us to miss clinical for a job. We could barely miss for anything actually. Might want to double check with the school about that sort of thing before you make any decisions. The BSN program will change your life. Will the part time job?

BTW, when I was hired for a job, I was told that they would work around my schooling. Fine. Until the boss left and a new nursing supervisor told me off. I put school first and left that job.

I wouldn't even want to miss clincals even if it was allowed. Clinicals are the meat of Nursing school and is more hands-on and applicable to real Nursing than lectures.

I plan to call management tomorrow, and if I cannot find a way to work around my schooling, then I guess all of you are right. The job has to go. I have kept my office job that will not allow me to miss class for this reason....should I still keep that?

The thing with the part time job is that it will allow me to get a foot in the door, sort of speak and may help me get a job after I graduate. I realize that there isn't a real big nursing shortage as some people claim, and for that reason, I find it hard to let the job go if it will help me post-grad. But you are right, the BSN program will help my career and family in so many ways.

Don't call, go in person and talk to the person in charge. Explain that you are grateful for th opportunity but you had the understanding that the position was for a student. Explain your schedule and how it isn't possible to miss class. Hopefully, they will make arrangements for you if not thank them, tell them you regret being unable to take the position right now. Having a foot in the door won't do you any good if you fail nursing school. Good Luck!

I doubt that your clinical instructors will be willing to excuse an absence because of your job.

I was a single mom that worked full time thru nursing school. It can definitely be done but you can't miss clinicals for work if you want to pass your courses. :( Hang on to whatever job you have that's willing to work with your school schedule.

SCHOOL. Jobs come& go, just like boyfriends. LOL
