Need an education topic for annual evaluation

Hello there dear nurses -

I am up for my annual review which needs to be turned in by Dec. 15th. Now, this is optional, but to get a better eval., we need to teach something (this is new to our eval process). All that have been evaluated since the "new" optional rules were in place have presented something. So, I am asking you all for some ideas....I work on GI/Endo, but we are a med/surg floor.

I was thinking of doing a poster on C-diff, MRSA, and VRE (what they are, iso precautions, meds frequently used, etc...), but I also want other ideas. One nurse has already covered wound care as an example...

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I then have to present it to my manager for approval.

Does it need to be a topic that you are well versed in, or can it be something you learn about and then teach your peers about? If the latter is the case, then consider Core measures, perhaps Pneumonia or Heart failure since you are working on a Med surg unit, it's inevitable you would have at least one pt a day afflicted w/ one or the other!

How about the National Patient Safety Goals for Hospitals? I'll bet your manager would love to have something to show JCAHO,when they pop in for a visit. I recently went to a 1 hour presentation & believe it or not, it was VERY interesting. When I left, I was "pumped up" & really gung ho to be a true patient advocate.

Do you have an educator in your facility? They might have a project that needs help, like instruction on new policies or new forms. Also, risk mgmt might have ideas. I got one last week regarding the role of potassium and insulin. Probably due to a med error someone made. I don't need those details, but it was impt enough that the CNO asked for an inservice.

H1N1 would be a great topic, especially if your facility has seen some H1N1 patients. Education needs to be done to reinterate that this virus is just a mutation of influenza A. CDC seen this mutation coming in 2006 and expect another mutation in early Spring of 2010. CDC has a wealth of information and if you can't find the New and Emerging Infectious Disease Journal on the CDC site, I can send you the link.
