    Hi everybody,
I have a question and PLEASE dont anybody blast me for typecasting, this was not MY statement, it was a LCSW I was friends with. She claims that a huge % of nurses are first born females of alcoholic fathers. Something to do with the fact that as the first born in dysfunction family of origin you are a caregiver from the get-go. Now my father was not an alcoholic, but I am a first born. I was wondering how many of us are first-borns. (Also, she said this to me a long time ago, and I have lost touch with her, so I cannot ask her where the heck she got her information was) I was just starting school at the time and didnt really fight with her about it, just kind of gave her one of the Hmmm, thats an interesting opinion.... answers. Also, she meant it as a compliment, that we take a difficult beginning and build on our strengths and turn them into a career.
So, how many first borns are out there?

youngest of four. Mom's a nurse, my ancestors going back to the settlers with the covered wagons in Santa Maria, Ca. were nurses.

First born of 3. Mom left when I was just 4. Dad got depressed and overwhelmed. I took over the caretaker role despite siblings not wanting me too. Very dysfunctional but loving family.

    second-born, non-alcoholic parents.
I'll also be the first RN in my family.

Nope, RN, third of five. Mother was a nurse, RN, second-born. Her sister also, LPN, fourth-born. My maternal grandmother a diploma nurse, 5th or 6th out of 8. Three cousins, all RN, none first born.

Yes, first born -- No alcoholic parents, but my parents were definitely adult children of alcoholics.

I've always been the "protector," the Big Sis, the one who took charge, though.

And yet I've always been a people pleaser as well -- something I'd like to try to cut down on, but have a hard time doing. Oh well.

Guess I fit the nursie profile pretty well, LOL.

6th born, father was an alcoholic, older brother was an addict, I spent a lot of my teen yrs trying to keep him out of trouble.
I guess it work, my brother has been clean for nearly 20 yrs now.

i am jumping in late but here goes...i am not a rn yet, will be someday, almost a lpn entering my final quarter! anyway...i am the 1st born out of 3 with no hx of etoh by my dad or mom but my dad was totally crazy/controlling/out of control rage/abusive...mom ignored it and i took care of my little brothers so that they didn't get beat. so 1st born, will be rn someday, caregiver and totally dysfunctional family!

Spoiled rotten youngest child here. 2 older brothers so that makes me the firstborn girl I guess. Plenty of addictive personalities on both sides of my family but no alcohol abuse.

First born, functional alcoholic father, deceased early mother, 2 siblings. Interesting thread.
