Now that I finally passed boards (yahoo!) I start my job as a new RN in a Neurosurgical ICU. I realize that I should purchase some malpractice insurance, but I have no idea how to do this, or what type, how much coverage. I had malpractice Ins. in school but it was bought in bulk through the school. Any suggestions??? Thanks so much!

There are several thoughts to this. Personally, I carry private malpractice insurance through Nurses Service Organization. (One of the sponsors of this site) and have for ten years. The reason is that I have done quite a bit of volunteer work with my children and don't want to have to worry. Of course, anything I say or do is always held to the standard of a nurse with similar experience. I also volunteer on the fire/rescue squad and wouldnt want to take any chance. For me, this gives me a little peace of mind. If all I did was work in a hospital, I don't know if I would or not. Ask your coworkers. Good luck.
