Who starts IV's on the floor? (not including peds)

How many attempts before you have someone else try?

When do you call the house supervisor?

If you see an AC will you try?

Finally... To see how honest people are..

How many don't even try and pass it on?:)

Thanks

-Work L&D...RN's start our own IVs

-Try twice

-Don't call the sup...we call anesthesia

-Don't go for the AC unless it's critical

-I never pass without trying

on our unit (trauma), we start our own IVs... hospital protocol states that we are only allowed 2 attempts per nurse... if nursing staff cannot start the IV, we consult anesthesiology... to date, i've only placed 1 IV AC... i prefer to go anywhere but there, but if i have to in a pinch, i would... unless i can't find a single vein, i always try at least 1 attempt... but i'm not shy about passing it on if i know it's beyond my skill level...

x2 tries if not successful call another rn. last resort ...have attending start ej line.

I can always get them

There are few that I have not been able to do.....

cannot take care of foot problems.... ie... ingrown toenails but I can hit a vein

new nurse what is the secret? :) :)
