Inform Director of Applying Elsewhere

Hello everyone,

So my question is do you ever inform your managers or directors when you plan to apply to other jobs? I only ask because I applied to a job about 6 months ago within the same hospital system and within hours, they called my director to insure I was okay to be transferred. It was just kind of an awkward conversation after. I didn't get the job though. So now, I am planning on applying to another position, and I was wondering if I should I should just give her a heads up.

If it's a internal move, yes, because (as you found out) HR is going to contact your boss and s/he will typically have to approve the move. External positions (leaving the current employer), no.

This is the rule of thumb I follow as well.

Beyond that, there are many variables that dictate how your current boss will react. Many of these variables we are not aware of. A good measuring stick for what will happen is their track record. How do they respond to other employees who have applied elsewhere?

Some appreciate being kept in the loop, some get bitter. Some will panic and perhaps sabotage your opportunity, others will take it in stride and remain professional.

It's just so hard to tell. Chances are, their mood for the day has more to do with it than anything else.

Heck no. I keep it quiet and say nothing until I am ready to give notice and jump ship.

Yes, you should inform your supervisor as a matter of professional courtesy. Most applications request permission to contact your former supervisor. If you do not give permission, it reflects poorly on your record.

This. Part of the reason I'm not applying internally (plus the fact that I want my job, in my department, just elsewhere).

Most applications request permission to contact your former supervisor.

I've only ever seen contact current/most recent employer, not supervisor. Those calls go to HR, where depending on the facility policy they might only give out information such as dates of employment and eligibility for rehire. Beyond HR, that's what references are for. The application I'm working on states one of my references should be a manager- they don't state current, so I'm using the manager who is no longer with the department but still recent enough to be a good reference.
