I have no idea what I want to do in nursing...

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I have been a nurse for 8 years. I worked as an LPN for 4 years with developmentally disabled kids/adults (LOVED IT!). A med/surg RN for 4 years (HATED IT) and I just started a new job working on a combination Tele/ICU unit (HATE IT). I haven't found my passion within nursing yet. I hated L&D, Mom/Baby in nursing school. I wasn't a fan of hospice on the few occasions I had to care for those types of patients. I kind of like ER when I'm floated there. What else is out there and how can I find out where I belong? I don't want to jump from job to job.

I will have my BSN this December 2016. I want to get out of floor nursing eventually.

Are there any resources out there that can help steer my career in the right direction for me? Thank you!

If you loved working with developmentally disabled you may be able to find a RN job there. We have some developmentally disabled schools around my area who hire RN's. Possibly school nursing you'd get some as well. Or some of the private duty nursing companies often have kids with developmental issues.

From what you've said, maybe do peds nursing, but maybe not in acute care if you did not like med surg/tele. Perhaps home health? Maybe a peds clinic? What did you not like about the areas you mentioned- that would give further insight into where to go.

What about short term ( or Long term) rehab? In my area nurses that have left the hospital for either of these areas were hired no problems and seemed to have great hours.

@lucy100

Do they like the job? I'll work any hours if I love what I do.

I thought about home health. I would like to get out of the hospital and get into the community and make a difference. I haven't tried Peds, but it was another rotation I hated in school. I don't like the baby/kids thing.

I feel like there are soooooooooo many things that you can do in the nursing field. How do I choose or experiment with different places without jumping from job to job? I want to try home health, but if I hate it then I'm once again moving on to a new job.

You might contact a local agency and see if you can go for a ride along. I was in the hospital and applied for my hospitals HH but was worried so they invited me to ride with one of the nurses to see what I thought. It is SO peaceful compared to the hospital. I loved it. It still has its stresses of course but nothing like the hospital.

If you enjoyed working with the DD population, have you thought about psychiatry? Also, you liked the ED which probably had many psych patients.
