How much notice would you give?

How much notice would you give if you are per diem? I recently went from full time to a per diem position at my facility due to a drastic change in the health insurance my employer offers. As long as I am ineligible through my employer I can go on my husband's insurance. But out of the blue I got a call about a really great full time job, and have passed the third round of interviews. Being hopeful I get this other position, I was wondering just how much notice I should give my current employer? Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Does your employer have an "Employee Handbook" or some similar document or policy on the subject? Check into that and do whatever it says is required. If no such document or policy exists, I would probably give at least 2 weeks. 30 days is better, but 2 weeks is often an expected minimum.

Check the HR policy at your facility. As a general guide 2 weeks for nurses and 4 weeks for managers.

It's usually not a bad idea to keep other irons in the fire when you have the opportunity to do so. The per diem job isn't likely a huge commitment, so why not go ahead and start the new job and evaluate whether or not to resign from the per diem position sometime down the road?

I would stay on in your per diem job and work a few days now and then to be sure the new job is what you hope it is. I found myself going back to my per diem job when my part time job didn't work out. I always say "don't burn any bridges".
