How much do you make with a BSN?

I do not have a BSN, but do know that in the two different systems I currently work for, BSN nurses make no more than ADN nurses.

My facility does not pay a BSN more than an ADN or diploma. All RNs are on the same pay scale. However, in order to be eligible for the highest level of the clinical ladder, certification or BSN is required.

In our system, your pay is based strictly on years worked. You can get additional pay if you received specialty certifications.

Having a BSN usually does not result in more money at a staff nurse level (though sometimes can result in a 25 cent to a dollar hourly increase), but opens the door to future opportunities and promotions. Look at it not so much as how much more money it will make you now, but in the future. I am on the West Coast, known for a high percentage of BSN graduates.

I'm in a major city in PA, with 9 years of nursing experience. Currently, at $51/hr for nights, $56/hr if it's Friday-Sunday nights as an ICU float nurse (without benefits). My facility also offers $59-$66/hr wages for another tier of pool nursing but it includes more weekend/holiday/premium day requirements. In another hospital that offers a weekend program for nurses, my rate is at $58/hr for night shifts (with benefits) on a 3/4 weekend schedule.
