I have been a preceptor in several different areas and have found that the most important thing is for the precepetor is to have an understanding where you are coming from. Do not expect your preceptor to know that you are scared or what skills that scare you or make you uncomfortable,those are the one your preceptor needs to work on. Ask questions, there are no dumb ones. If you are unsure of something say so. You are there in a learning capacity they should not use you as extra staffing and at first your preceptor should be next to whenever you provide care. Try not to get fustrated, it can be very hard having someone point out your mistakes to you and we all make mistakes( hopefully your preceptor is pointing out your positive actions as well.) If your preceptor is not listening to your needs ask to speak to her in private. If there are no changes speak to your charge nurse or instructor. I encourage everyone to keep a journal,it can help you should problems arise and it will be great to look back on when you become a preceptor and you can relive what it was like as a preceptee. I hope so. It is such a stressful time last thing they need is a preceptor that rides a broom. :chuckle
