Gen X Precepting Baby Boomer.................

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I have re-entered nursing (have 20 yrs. of RN, now in new unit). I am of the Leave It To Beaver generation and now am chasing after a Gen X'er! She is smart and leaves my feet aching after 12 hours of running :monkeydance: .

Just wondering what the readers' experience has been from both sides? :paw:

That would be my situation as well; heck, I'm a I Love Lucy generation, new grad, presently on orientation as a graduate nurse and most of the preceptors I'm assigned to are young enough to be my daughter/son. Doesn't bother me though. Age never mattered to me and I've never felt uncomfortable about it, even in nursing school with me being the oldest in the class.

I'm a genXer and have precepted nurses who are older than my mother. I've never found the age thing to be a big deal. I did think one was a little uncomfortable with it at first, but I just ignored it and we got on fine.

Doesnt make a bit of difference to me. Im older, i was precepted, i am doing the precepting now and as long as they know their stuff somewhat,, it works. Havent had one yet,, either older or younger than me show me any new tricks, but ive shown them a few. Experience is always going to win, no matter what age you are.

I'm proud to be a Gen X'er but I get on with all others. I really value the wisdom and advice that has been shared by my mothers and grandmothers generations.
