Dr. Phil's book

I bought the Dr. Phil book and so far I think its really helpful. I'm on ch. 2 and haven't even started thinking about food. Right now I'm focusing on the stressors in my life and trying to remove negativity from my life. My review overall so far...if you take your time with this book it will help. Don't rush through and cut to the "important" stuff. Take your time and read every page and do every written exercise. This book will help people with there weight and their lives in general if you keep an open mind.

Anyone else out there reading the book?

By the way I have tried Weight Watchers, Atkins, Slim Fast, Cabbage Soup, diet pills and I only 50 lbs to lose (and I am being realistic :) ) ....and still none of these has worked.

Each one worked for a little bit, but I ended up binge eating on healthy things because of the stress I was facing...which eventually lead to me binging on bad things again. So far I feel like this "plan" may work because I forced myself to except that it is going to take time. I really do recommend it to anyone, no matter how much weight they are trying to lose.

I hope I'm bringing this up in the right forum, but I saw some disucssion about the Atkins posted here.

I do a lot of stress eating and find myself in my mid-40s trying to keep my weight in a healthy range.

I also know that besides emotional eating certain foods can have addicting qualities. I've found as I've been on a low carb diet, I don't overeat as much, as I'm not triggered. Certain carbs like say if I eat a candy bar or a bag of chips will trigger an eating binge. Plus some high calorie foods like cheese and meats contain opiate like sustances that cause people to crave and eat them.

So for me it's a combination of emotional and physical. If Dr. Phil is talking about only one, he has only part of the picture. Although it's a very important part, that other diets leave out.

edited to add: Chocolate and sugar has proven to be physically addicting as well. Doesn't have anything to do with a person's "issues".

Good luck!

I just can't stand the guy. He became "celebretized" after Oprah got him famous.(Now they compete for a time slot, don they?)

He isn't exactly Mr THIN and buff himself. Yes, he admits it, but come on! He should stick to psychoanaysis and leave the nutrition and "diet" help to others.

By the way, I saw "Dr Phil "nutririon bars at Target yesturday, in the protien/diet bar aisle. Can you imagine?

I think Dr Phil has excellent advice! What blows my mind in how people PAY him good money for the common sense advice that he gives. It seems like we don't use common sense anymore. I've seen him on Oprah and people act like they have never heard such talk! I do think he is definitely cashing in on his success!

I really like Dr. Phil and his approach to helping people who ASK for his advice.

My theory is if you don't want the truth as the person may put it to you whom you are seeking the advice from.........don't ask!

I'm a very straightforward, down to earth and even down right honest about things people ask me. Then when they hear what I think, they get mad or they may agree. Their reaction to how I answer their questions is not my problem. Truth hurts sometimes, but the truth is all I care to hear, and all others will ever hear from me. How you handle the consequences of that truth is also not my problem.........but the person asking for the advice. Dr. Phil and I think alike. He's an alright kind of guy, and I love the way he tells it like it is. :D

I agree he isn't Mr. Thin either, wonder what his diet is like and if he's on the diet.

Oprah and him are very close, in fact I think her production company owns his show. The agreement when he went out on his own was his timeslot was not to compete with his. (She would blow him out of the water IMHO).

I was extremely hungry in Walmart the other day and laughed when I saw his bars, but bought one. I got the choclate version and it tasted just like a chocolate flavored rice crispy treat. Those "nutrition" bars are o.k. in a jam when my sugars low. But to fool myself that the highly processed food I'm eating is "health" food and healthy eating is only fooling myself.

He was pimping his book out on Letterman the other night and was saying that he comes from a long line of very obese people. I think he was trying to incinuate that he would be a real fatty if he allowed it. With that in mind, I find him to be more credible than those ultra slim fitness gurus with the high metabolisms when it comes to weight loss advice. He can be annoyingly honest, but I still like him.
