condom catheters

Give me your best tips for getting condom caths to stay put. I work in home health and have a patient that had a foley, but kept pulling it out. The physician said ok to try a condom cath, but after putting it on this morning, the caregiver called to say it already came off.

I made sure the member was dry (difficult because he urinates frequently), and used skin prep before applying the catheter. He has advanced Parkinson's plus dementia and is very active in his bed, so this is going to be a challenge---but I really want to try because he hates the foley so much. When the caregiver told him I was removing the foley this morning, he looked at me and said "God bless you!"

Specializes in Cath Lab.

I dont know if his has been mentioned, but in my patients that are particularly small and "innies" I sometimes use a pedi's condom cath because of the size and they usually fit pretty well.

Specializes in MICU, SICU, CICU.

I have a little trick that works for men who are confused and worried about wetting the bed and not allowed out of bed.

I take a depends guards for men, the kind of pad with some elastic and an adhesive strip on the outside, remove the paper covering, wrap it around the member and stick it back on itself. Not tight but securely fastened back on itself. They like to hold it in place and then they go to sleep. Anyway it usually works so I thought I would share.

I gave up on those condom catheters a long time ago.
