Changing nursing license to another state/Compact States

Hey everyone. I'm currently a nursing student with about 1 year left, and just had a question about my license when I get it. I plan to get my license in the state of Virginia, and was wondering if anyone knows if VA has a compact with other states? (So my license would be good in another state without getting another license)

Another question I have is, if I do switch to another state that doesn't have a compact with VA, how hard is it to apply for a license there? Do you have to retake the NCLEX or pay a fee? Sorry if these questions are stupid, I'm just trying to figure things out. Where I live, PN's start about 40k a year, and the cost of living is just SO HIGH ($1500 rent on a 1br apartment) and I do NOT plan to stay in this area or state when I graduate!

Does "permanent resident " mean holding green card or citizenship???

Does it vary for foreign nurses?

I meant "permanent residence" only in the sense of living physically in the state -- maintaining a home there. I didn't mean any reference to residency/visa/citizenship status. I don't think the rules are any different for foreign nurses (but I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong :)) -- if you are able to work legally in the US and able to get a state license, you will get a compact license if you are living in the state, and a traditional (non-compact) license if you are not.

A license only in one state usually is a license issued to you because you are working in a governmental institution or facility for example a federal hospital etc.This license is issued to you based on the information you provide about your residency when you apply for it.

Check DORA.STATE for further explanation.

you get a ''maryland license only'' if you live currently in another non-compact state.

does anyone know if i can work with the temporary permit of one compact state in another compact state while waiting for my real license to be mailed to me?

i have a tennessee rn temporary license and want to move in colorado.can i work with the tennessee's rn temporary license in colorado while waiting fro the real tennessee license to be mailed to me?

I am so lost with the whole process of transferring license. I plan on taking my NCLEX in Florida as this is where I am attending school but soon after graduation I am moving to Texas and need to transfer my license....should I take the Texas NCLEX here? Or pay to transfer it?
