Now on the flip side, if you are dieting and burning fat and losing weight, aren't you going to spill ketones in some sort of fashion or another? The difference with Atkins/South Beach is that you do it for a 2 week period then stop. Not that every nursing mother does induction, nor should she necessarily, but its all indivicual.
No. You can still burn fat and lose weight without spilling ketones. Ketosis only happens when your carb level is extremely restricted. And on Atkins, it doesn't just last for two weeks. Depending on your insulin resistance level, ketosis can go on well into the OWL phase, as well. This is why it's recommended that if you're breastfeeding or pregnant, you skip induction and start at a higher carb level, like 40-50/day.
Have you ever been in the LLL? Have you ever been to the meetings and interacted with the people? I've lived in 4 states and belonged to 2 different state groups. ....And as for my reference of nipple nazi's, it was a term that i shoot out at times and meant no offense too. I was trying to keep this post informative yet light, and you've managed to make it personal and somewhat of a debate. Sorry if i offended you, but that wasn't my intention. I'd say lighten up a bit.
Obviously I'm not going to change your mind on this, so it's an exercise in futility. Suffice it to say - YES, I have been *heavily* involved with LLL. And it just bothers me when people paint an entire organization with a brush due to their experiences in one or two groups. As I said before, every Leader is different. If she's being judgemental and putting down moms who don't breastfeed, then she's not a very good representative of La Leche League, because that is NOT what they're all about. Anyway, I'm sorry you had a bad experience(s) with those groups. Not all groups are like that.
Regarding "Nipple Nazi" - yes, I realize you were trying to be light-hearted. All I ask is that people THINK before using that phrase. "NAZI" is an extremely offensive word. Perhaps I do need to lighten up, but when I hear that word, it brings to mind the plight of my ancestors, which is certainly not a light-hearted topic.
If you could get that information about infant brain development and ketosis, I'd appreciate it!
