Just found out daughter has large cyst with small tumor beside it on her brain. The cyst is size of an apple. It is located on left hemisphere with small deviation to the right. They are talking about draining it, ect....but one of the side effects of draining they told us was brain swelling. My question is how frequently has anyone seen this? what questions do we ask, ect...this is out of my element....cardio/pulmo nurse here so I feel helpless in helping my husband. thanks for any info.....

I don't know the answer to your question but I wanted to say that I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Best wishes to you.

Thank you very much Gator..

I don't know either but I'll be praying for your family.

Is it an arachnoid cyst? I worked neurosugery for 6 years. Either/ or... it generally is always reduced ( drained) if it is creating a shift. Did the neurosurgeon mention a shunt at all? Is the tumour benign? There is alot of good info available on the net now that may help you more. Sorry I can't be of more help at this point, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

has your dgtr seen neurologist yet?..l would start questioning there....l have not heard of this either. Prayers to you and your family.

Sorry, don't have any info, but wanted to say thoughts and prayers for her full recovery.

Thanks to everyone. The doctor thinks it is benign. No shunt was mentioned. My husband looked on the internet most of yesterday and found some good sites. Also got the name of some good surgeons at Duke and UPMC. Thanks again to everyone and for the thoughts and prayers....

You have our (my sweetie and myself) thoughts and prayers. I know nothing about the brain in that regards. My area of interest is cardiology. I am very anxious to know the outcome, however. Please do keep us posted.

Best wishes. Duke is an awesome place. I worked there early 90s for a year. Good luck.

She probably will be given steriods like decadron for the swelling.

Just want to thank everyone for their kindness. She is going to have surgery Monday at UPMC, which takes me to another thread. God Bless everyone....
