BLS/ACLS maintanance

Nurses General Nursing

For you nurses out there, in your hospital do you have a grace period if your BLS/ACLS have expired and need renewing. If they did expire, does your agency suspend you until you get your license, do they give you a grace period for which one can obtain BLS/ACLS as quickly as possible. What is your agency's policy??? Curiouser and curioser...

There is no grace period at any of the three hospitals I've worked at. You're suspended until it's brought up to date. I've never worked as an agency nurse.

BLS, absolutely no grace. You can't work without an active CPR card.

ACLS, sometimes a little bit of wiggle room....As in card expires in June, next available class is in July. I know a local children's hospital that has absolutely no grace period with PALS.

If I may ask, what is curious about the situation?

Thanks for your replies!

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

No grace for expired BLS any more than for an expired nursing license.

ACLS/PALS depends on unit/job may result in reassignment if a regular need for those skills. For example if my ACLS card expired it wouldn't matter at this time, I'm exclusively pediatrics.
