I have previous experience as a certified ophthalmic assistant prior to becoming an RN and now have 3 1/2 years of bedside nursing experience in Telemetry. I am currently researching becoming an ophthalmic RN. I was wondering if any members here on allnurses.com are in the ophthalmology field.

Specializes in Hospital Education Coordinator.

NO. I worked 9 years as ophthalmic tech but once I received RN license it was nearly impossible to find job in that area. I miss eyeballs.

Sigh, I wanted to be an eyeball nurse.... There is nothing out there, as far as I can see.... Lol....

:) Yeah, I miss them too. And taking care of patients from the neck up only. ;) I am trying to market myself as an ophthalmic nurse- to be. I have visited a few local eye centers that have surgery suites and employ RNs. I have found two, so far. I interviewed with a nurse manager today and we hit it off pretty well. We talked for a good twenty five mintes in her office and she said I was more than qualified. They use a few per diem nurses now so I tried to explain the benefit of having me there, it would cut down on the expensive per diem pay. I will follow up soon. I am excited it went well but don't want to get my hopes up. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Thanks. :)

Update: Just got hired on at an outpatient surgery center doing recovery/PACU for eye surgeons and ENT. So excited. :)

Now I know, it CAN be done. I was hired at an ophthalmology ambulatory surgery center on Thursdsay. :) 14 eye surgeons. Do your research. Call some local ophthalmologists and find out where they do surgery than dust off the resume and market yourself with your previous eye experience. It took me two months to finally do it (I left bedside nursing two months ago, worked part time at another ambulatory surgery center) and I am now at an eye center. :yeah:

Update: It has been a year since my last post on this thread. I am still at the eye surgery center and loving every minute of it.

Eyeballs freak me out. :woot:

Many congrats on your continued success!!

I'm a COA and am very interested in nursing. At first, I just wanted to take some nursing courses to be a better allied health technician. But the more I have learned, the more I want to know about he real life part of the job. I do still love eyeballs and am interested in becoming an ophthalmic nurse. What is it like?? Working at a surgery center sounds very interesting!! :)

Hello. Ive been a COA for 6 years and a registered nurse for 6 months. I'm interested in going back to eyes. Do you have any suggestions? Have you all found your careers in eyes yet?
