Advice from Nurse Managers, please

    I need some advice on how to proceed. I recently transferred from one department to another. I truly enjoyed the work I did in my original department, but thought my dream job was where I transferred to. Come to find out, it's not. I don't fit in with the staff very well and the job itself is just not keeping my attention or providing me much pleasure. I'm about a third of the way through orientation. My question is, as a nurse manager, would you be willing to work with me to transfer out of this department at this point in my orientation? I don't want to wait until I am off of orientation and considered full staff as I know that the department would take a bigger hit that way. I just don't think that is professional. I also don't want to waste anymore of my preceptor's time or the unit's money in training me for a job I know I have no intention of keeping. But I feel like such a loser for being so excited about this new opportunity and ending up completely miserable. Any advice would be very appreciated.

    Orienting a new employee is costly and ties up experienced staff. If you are certain that this position is not for you, I applaud your willingness to speak up now, while costs and disruption to unit scheduling can be minimized.

    Be prepared to sit down with your manager and/or HR to discuss options to maintain your employment in a setting that is satisfactory to you and minimizes costs/staffing disruptions to the institution.
