Advice needed on first RN job

I have been applying nearly everywhere in my state in every field the last three months and callbacks have been few and far between. I finally landed an interview at a psych/ substance abuse center and they decided to offer me a PRN position.

Now, I also have an interview scheduled at a hospital on a stepdown unit, the problem is that it's not for another week...

So now I'm wondering what I should tell the psych hiring manager...I would certainly much rather have that PRN job than nothing at all, but feel the hospital setting would be better for a new grad. Any advice?

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Take the job offered. You can always quit. They won;t be happy if you do but at least you will have one job. It's easier to find employment when you are employed.

Congrats and good luck!

Take the psych job. DO NOT TELL THE PSYCH MANAGER ANYTHING. Any other offers in the works is YOUR business.

If the stepdown job comes through . and you prefer that position, you owe the psych job zip.. zero.. nada.

You bet they feel the same way about you.

Look out for number one.. and that is YOU!

Good luck.. keep us posted!

I agree. In this job market you should do what you have to do. And you are correct that the hospital position would be much better for you.

So there's nothing wrong with taking it and just resigning after a few weeks? Will future employers look down on not staying at a job for 6 mos - year?

If that were to happen (quitting after a few weeks) you don't even need to put it on your resume. It's a PRN job and you can always keep it for the extra paycheck. However you don't want to turn down a potentially reasonable job if the stepdown position falls through.

I would take the job. If you get offered the other job you could still probably maintain the PRN job by working like 1 8hr shift per pay period.
