About osteoperosis...family related..

I recently found out my mom has osteoperosis. I figured something was wrong with the way she was acting lately. She seems really stiff when she walks, and she is always twisting a wrist or an ankle. My dad came out and told the family. I am really sad and worried about her. I have been finding out info about the disease and ways that you can treat it to reduce more bone loss. I just want to know if she eats more healthy, and exercises regularly, can she live a mobile life. Has anyone witnessed this before?

I am also a bit angry because she doesn't take eating right and exercising seriously. Since she is still mobile she thinks everything is okay.

stiffness and twisting ankles don't have anything to do with osteoporosis-- osteoporosis doesn't cause them. as a matter of fact, many women and men have osteoporosis and don't feel any different at all, and only find out when they have a bone density scan or when they fall and fracture something, thus getting x-rayed.

she may have something else going on with her that's making her stiff and prone to ankle or wrist pain (perhaps arthritis, perhaps something else), and either she and your dad don't understand it or they don't want to tell you for some reason.

we don't give medical advice, but it's well-known that osteoporosis related to aging is treatable. her primary care can tell her. perhaps she'd like it if you went to her appointment with her so you could help. or not, her call.
